Theater Delta Reflective Essay

When I got the listserv announcement about spring internships with APPLES, I’m quite sure what I expected to get out of. While I realize that was only six months ago or so, it’s difficult to remember the expectations I had going into the semester. Theater Delta seemed to be the perfect mixture of my interests – dramatic arts and social justice. In just four months, I worked in almost every capacity the organization has – researcher, data analyst, script developer, videographer, etc. The list goes on and on, and all of those responsibilities taught me a great deal when it comes to working on the logistical side of a non-profit. I learned that service organizations need help in all capacities, and that no matter what your strengths or interests are, you can and will be an asset to your organization.
I’d say the biggest success I had with Theater Delta was writing a successful literature review! As a mathematics major, I think very analytically, and numbers are almost essential for me to fully comprehend something. When I was tasked with putting together a literature review on driving cessation, I was hesitant and skeptical of if I would do a good job or not. Research in social sciences is far from my forte, which made this an intimidating task. However, the research being social science made it an easier task in many ways. Unlike research in physical sciences which could possibly require extensive background knowledge in the field, these articles were written in very clear and succinct terms, while still serving as an intellectual argument. The only real background knowledge required to understand the subject is knowing what dementia is and some of its side effects. Once I realized that the material was something I was more than capable of understanding and synthesizing, the rest of it just fell into place. My supervisor was pretty impressed with my final product, and that was nice to hear considering how apprehensive I was about the initial assignment. The biggest challenge was just a minor logistical thing in the grand scheme of things, but a lot of it was because of my communication with Ben. He travels a lot with this organization, and as the only staff member, I’m can’t work when he’s out of town. I’ve talked to him before about trying to think of assignments for me to take care of during times like this, but he never really gets back to me. Even now, I still have fifteen hours or so of my award that isn’t scheduled because we just don’t have times that coincide, and he just never gives me assignments to work on at home. I guess I’m partially to blame for this, but I’ve been pretty insistent on getting him to find work for me outside of the office. We scheduled

Theater Delta doesn’t advocate for either side of an issue when presenting it to an audience, as it relies solely on the facts and the scientific research available on the topic. I think the interactive theater format could be used to talk to communities about controversial topics in global service such as voluntourism. The scene would present the audience with all of the facts on voluntourism, the pros and cons of it, and what each side has at stake on the issue. By not advocating for either side, it allows each audience member to form their own opinion, which is critical for these types of

My mother always said that things happen for a reason. I believe that the reason I joined Key Club during my freshman year of high school was to lead me to my major, public relations. At the time, I wanted to join the student-led community service organization just to improve my college applications. However, I quickly became engrossed in the organization, building my passion for serving others and eventually becoming club webmaster the following year.…

When I returned to Williams, I used the skills I gained to improve the organization, communication, and public branding of our student theater company. This spring, I also managed a festival of new works on campus organized by the Theatre Department, becoming the first student to ever manage a department event. A lot of my work as the Festival Production Manager involved close communication with the production teams, as well as the administrators of the festival. My role allowed me to connect with everyone’s artistic motivations and inspirations, teaching me how best to support their endeavors from a managerial standpoint while also furthering all of their creative desires. It also afforded me the opportunity to oversee multiple financial, scheduling, and production logistics that resulted from organizing multiple events in unison.…

“Chicago,” I said, as we drove past the Chicago Theatre. I read every word that my eyes could catch as we sped down the attractive streets of downtown Chicago. I was not sure where my driver was taking me, but I knew that I did not want to be in the car with this mean old woman anymore. She was my new caseworker, Ms. Jordan, and she was in charge of finding me a family. My old caseworker was Ms. Kelly, she was nice and she always made me feel loved.…

Being a dramaturgical theorist studying gym behavior would give one many interesting subjects and possible things to study. By simply looking at the stereotypes associated with gym culture, you could see them as one huge performance. The best, and most widely known example of this “performance” would be the men from the show Jersey Shore. Ever since Jersey Shore had been popularized I personally, have seen a rise in “gym going.” Going to the gym to these men gives them a sense of prestige and dignity, otherwise known as Face.…

On Monday October 12th at the Orpheum Theatre in Wichita Kansas, our class, 7th and 8th PIB, witnessed some of literatures best be performed on the stage chamber theatre style by Chamber Theatre Productions. In case you are like me and not affiliated with theatre and things of that sort the definition of chamber theatre is: A method of adapting literary works to the stage using a maximal amount of the works original texts and often minimal and suggestive settings (definition provided by Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). The plays consisted of “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” both by Edgar Allan Poe, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving, “The Monkeys paw” by WW Jacobs, “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, and finally “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain. There were five actors in total involved in this production, three male and two female. Also in the break between there was an intermission set changes which frankly lasted way too long causing many people in the audience to grow restless.…

Entertainment in this industry has proved the world that musical theatre is just as amusing as a football event played on the weekends. Acquiring a job in this field can be difficult, but with hard work it can be done. Musical theatre has been around for a long time and has changed over decades.…

This play will be put on a stage. This will not be a completely normal stage, it will be on a thrust type stage. I like this kind of state, because it is interesting and not a boring normal stage where the audience just site right in front of the stage. There will be a curtain in between each act/scene, to allow out backstage members to change the background of the scene. I think that this stage type will be perfect audience.…

A rising art form in popular culture today is none other than the American musical theatre. An array of factors have emerged and collided over the past decade to bring what was once a niche staple of American culture to the forefront of the media and culture around the world. The sum of an evolving variety of music genres within the form, an increased interest and engagement by A and B list celebrities, an increasingly globalized Western culture, among other influences have allowed for the growth and current peak prosperity of the musical theatre genre across many platforms and international lines. On Friday, October 16th, I attended the opening night performance of the musical “The Addams Family” at the Alfresco Arts Center in Granite City, Illinois. The doors opened at 6:30pm and the play began promptly at 7:30pm after a brief welcoming and introduction through the sound system. With my previous experiences in watching theatrical performances, I knew before arriving at the production that no two plays or venues are the exact same. This expectation was definitely true upon my arrival and throughout my time spent at the Alfresco Arts Center. In comparison to my experience at the Looking Glass Playhouse last month, there are several differences between the two, yet I would consider both to be quality community theatres worth attending…
