Underclassman Reflection

Apprehensively sliding through the door to Room 119 to introduce myself to the members of Gatlinburg-Pittman’s band program marked one of the most developmental courses of action I have ever taken. Learning how to march in rhythm with a flock of students of differing grades and ages, discovering the importance of working within strict time constraints, and transporting percussion equipment weighing roughly as much as myself were, among several other memories, trademarks of my freshman and sophomore high school years. Through marching and concert band, I have discovered how to effectively learn independently, to take on responsibility for my actions, and to guide underclassmen when help is requested. In doing so, my passion for being part of Gatlinburg-Pittman’s band and providing services to the program has blossomed and flourished. This year, I had the pleasure of earning a position as a section leader among our clarinetists, and now, I continue to strive to promote excellence and discipline within the section. The results have revealed an upward trend: Over the course of the 2016-2017 school year, the overall organization and attendance of sectionals have more than doubled among the clarinetists, and overall tone quality has improved. Now, I aspire to expand the breadth of my influence to the rest of …show more content…
If presented the opportunity, I can guide Gatlinburg-Pittman’s band to success with a kind, yet firm hand. I will operate as the liaison between the students and the directors, and when important decisions require opinions, I will represent the best interests of the band student body. A strong band program requires its leaders to commit to the guidance and supervision of band as a whole to provide aid when necessary and to ensure proper use of resources and time, and I am capable of upholding these

Marching Band Officer Essay I am interested in becoming a Drill Tech Captain or Brass Captain for the 2018-2019 Marching Band season. Ever since I started marching with the Mahwah Marching Thunderbirds, I have found myself amazed and interested in the culmination of expression through music and movement. Never before have I participated in an activity with such structure, passion, pride, and strong relationships between members. As a freshman, I was inspired by professional leaders of the band and how they were not only dignified while on the field, but enthusiastic and welcoming as well. I would love to be a leader in Marching Band so that I may positively contribute to the transference of the marching band drill and music from paper…

The aggie band began its roots with Joseph Holick, a campus cobbler, who arranged the Aggie Band in 1894, and after 4 directors and years of work on marching and precision maneuvers the Aggie Band has become an irreplaceable and important aspect of the Texas A&M culture (1). Therefore, it was essential for the band’s informal performance at Rudder Fountain to showcase this important aspect of Aggie culture, and remind everyone they are in the presence of the “Nationally Famous Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.” The culture of Texas A&M is very different compared to other universities, it is rooted in agricultural and military beginnings, and these military beginning play a huge role in shaping the band’s performance and attire. The Corps of Cadets are regarded as “Keepers of the Spirit” and maintain that record with ensuring traditions and the culture is upheld and taught. Furthermore, the last song played by the aggie band on February 11 was the Aggie War Hymn; however, the most fascinating portion of the performance of the Aggie War Hymn, was that the band members immediately quit playing and joined in arms and legs and sang the hymn.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…

Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. Whenever I participate in an ensemble, whether it be the SCHS Chamber Orchestra or YOPW’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, I enter into a haven in which the excess worries of everyday life wither away, and all that stands is the music before me. With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability…

But, it’s not just the previous drum majors I was influenced by; Nick, Michael, Vy, Mr. Sebastian, and my wonderful section leader Sarah also inspired me too. However, many previous drum majors had set the standards at a high level and it's my privilege and responsibility to maintain the tradition but at the same time help the band improve through words of encouragements. Even though I may not have a recognizable leadership position prior to this, one reason out of many reasons why I would be a successful leader is that I am very understanding with the people I’m working with. I know how to deal with problems that band members usually face because I was in the same position as they were, therefore, I will try my best to help them with any problems they might have as well as constantly learning from my fellow bandos to make self improvements. My goal is to motivate and inspire every member to keep pushing and practicing because if they strive for it, they will become successful.…

During the final week of classes at Truman, I had the pleasure of hearing the school’s jazz bands in concert. During the concert, the Jazz Lab band and the Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Tim AuBuchon, played several jazz standards and modern favorites. The Jazz Lab band started out the night with five big band pieces. The instrumentation of the Jazz Lab band was standard for a big band; it included about four of each horn (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone), an upright bass, a piano, and a drumset.…

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth.…

The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to ALIENATE someone because they are not the same as them, different ETHNITICIY or part of a MINORITY GROUP.…

I thoroughly enjoyed observing Dr. Silveira conduct and lead the IC Concert Band in rehearsal today. Dr. Silveira led a very efficient rehearsal that resulted in a lot of playing by the ensemble, and significant improvement. At the beginning of the rehearsal, I noticed that flutes, clarinets and saxophones were there. I discovered later that this was because they were given sectional time while Dr. Silveira worked with the rest of the ensemble for a portion of the rehearsal.…

On October 17, I was able to observe Ryan Anderson’s junior and senior high band. This was an eye opening experience because of the differences he ran his band. Dover-Eyota Middle and High is a Grammy nominated band program, so this was a great opportunity to see a band outside of Tennessee. Mr. Anderson did utilize the room in a big way. Firstly, he purposefully spread everyone in the room out.…
