I am interested in becoming a Drill Tech Captain or Brass Captain for the 2018-2019 Marching Band season. Ever since I started marching with the Mahwah Marching Thunderbirds, I have found myself amazed and interested in the culmination of expression through music and movement. Never before have I participated in an activity with such structure, passion, pride, and strong relationships between members. As a freshman, I was inspired by professional leaders of the band and how they were not only dignified while on the field, but enthusiastic and welcoming as well. I would love to be a leader in Marching Band so that I may positively contribute to the transference of the marching band drill and music from paper to our bodies, instruments, and hearts. I believe I would benefit the band by being Drill Tech Captain because I am a very detail oriented person and believe that a little attention to detail could go a long way--especially in an activity where small details (like step size and horn angles) are crucial to portraying the intended performance. …show more content…
I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books. I would love to see both underclassmen and upperclassmen improve upon their marching skills and ability to make forms and I would be honored to help them do so. As a brass captain, I feel as though I would benefit the band because I am enthusiastic and would encourage the brass put forth 100% effort toward every warm-up and play-through of the music. I would be sure to emphasize nuances of the music in rehearsal, such as dynamic changes and accent marks because I believe that a musical performance--no matter the ensemble--is not truly successful without genuine expression. Music touches people unlike any other art form and I believe the music of our show this upcoming year should be nothing short of impassioned. As a Drill Tech Captain, I would want to implement some more exciting aspect of putting drill from our binders to dot books. I have noticed that many people write sloppy dot books in the beginning of the season and it influences people’s attitude. Sloppy dot books show a lack of regard for the precision of the show and if everyone took pride in making them look nice and organized, I believe they would be more eager to pay attention to what they have written down and apply it to their marching. In order to keep people motivated and take the process of learning drill more seriously, I would want to enforce a point system for each section of the band and rate the initial neatness and presentability of the dot books. Additionally, I would have dot book checks at the rehearsal to keep track of which section is most prepared so that at the end of the season, the winning section can be recognized and awarded. Hopefully, this system would cause people to take pride in not only their dot books, but increase their awareness of their spot in the show. By paying extra attention and care to their dot
