During week eleven I had the opportunity to sit in on parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday. Although the days were very long since we were at school until 6:30pm each night, I gain knew insight from the teacher’s perspective. I learned that it is best to sit beside the parents instead of sitting in the “teacher’s chair” so that parents do not feel intimidated as you share information about their students. You want to make the parents feel comfortable as they listening to the teacher give an overview of their students’ progress, strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Although I have not been contacted by anyone from the school, I have been told they were interested in having me fill a long term sub position after graduation. Staff from BSIS have been in contact with the Mrs. Blanton, the assistant principal, and Mrs. Scruggs, but I have not been contacted other than the observation. On Wednesday morning the reading coach observed me teach math and reading for almost two hours. This was one of the most unusual mornings of the entire school year. During this two-hour time period the class phone rang three or four times, there were five or six interruptions from people knocking on the door to pull students out for intervention or to climb the rock wall because they sold enough items during the fundraiser. Not only did all of the interruptions occur, but I had the math tutor in my classroom pulling students to work with and a new push in began that morning. This push in is much larger than the group that comes in during the Science/Social Studies time. I am certain that my classroom was filled to capacity during the short time frame I was observed. Even with all of this happening in the classroom my students behaved perfectly since they have been taught how to respond when there are interruptions during our lessons.
