Persuasive Essay On Polar Ice

Improved Essays
Today there is a lot of discussion about the ice that is melting at the Poles. Both Antarctica and Greenland are losing ice. The poles lose around 350 billion tons of ice each year, and as a result, the sea level has risen 11,1 millimeters since 1992. Scientists have discovered that the polar ice caps are losing ice cover at a rate of 9% each year. Since 1995 the Arctic ice has reduced by as much as 40%. Some scientists conclude that the Arctic will be ice-free by 2040. What can we do?
First and foremost the ice melt does not only affect the sea level but when the ice melts, the streams of fresh water causes the ocean to get less salty. Fish and other sea creatures, such as whales, turtles, and dolphins, are animals that are depending on saltwater.

Why should we be concerned? There are many affects of melting sea ice that affects the majority of the Earth. One of the main impacts is what I stated before, the sea ice tends to reflect the sunlight. This causes a regulated temperature throughout the Earth. With the arctic ice sheets melting, less and less radiation is being reflected causing an increase in global temperature.…

Fifty years ago, in addition to his "all-season" fishing gear, the only tool an ice fisherman required for some ice fishing fun was an axe to chop through the ice. Today things have advanced considerably. While there is a multitude of equipment out there claiming to be a necessity, most of it is unnecessary. The basic gear listed here may also not be completely necessary, but it can make your fishing a little more enjoyable and maybe even help you catch a few more fish. Dressing properly seems like such a fundamental requirement, it doesn't even seem worthy of mentioning, but it is appropriate clothing that will keep you comfortable and able to remain fishing for a longer period.…

Global sea levels rose about 17 centimetres in the last century because of melting ice caps. Small islands and cities like New Orleans will be underwater if the ice caps continue to melt. Eventually, almost half of Russia, Australia, South America and almost all of Europe will be covered in water. Millions of people’s homes may be destroyed and submerged in water all because we won 't cut back on issues such as factory output and vehicle…

The average americans footprint shrinks the ice by a lot, the size of 16 queen-sized beds annually. With about 7 billion people contribution, we release around 36 billion metric tons of CO₂ per year. With another trillion tons of CO₂ released, the Arctic may be ice free for the first time in 125,000 years, and it may happen before 2050, Notz estimates. Julienne Strove and Notz have mad many studies on the…

Warming temperatures are rapidly melting a growing percentage of the Arctic sea ice.. Snow cover on land is also dwindling in many areas. Because of the low percentage of snow and ice, these areas go from having bright and shiny blankets of snow that reflect the sun 's heat, to sunlight-absorbing surfaces that cause the earth to get hotter. But this isn 't the only problem, as the ice melts and the ocean’s water warms, they expand, causing the sea-levels to rise. These rising sea levels threaten to take over areas and islands with low or short shores, as well as erode shoreline, and damage property and ecosystems.…

Honorable Chair and distinguished delegates, Climate Change is an urgent challenge for developed and developing countries alike, as it threatens human security across all borders. The international community needs to strengthen its collective efforts against climate change with a sense of urgency. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) suggested that annual average air temperatures nationwide rose by a rate equivalent to 1.15°C per century between 1898 and 2010. This is considerably higher than the global average temperature rises of 0.74°C over the last century. Not only temperatures have been rising in Japan, they’ve been rising faster here than they have elsewhere — with some of that difference accounted for by the heat-island effect found in…

The melting trend in northern Canada is increasing. Rapidly Over the past 30 years, the annual average sea-ice extent has decreased almost one million square kilometers ( source 12). Proof that it is possible to slow this down is on January 1st 1989, the day The Montreal Protocol came into affect. It was an international treaty to phase out various products that were contributing to ozone depletion. The proof was in the animals living in the arctic; they were developing skin cancer and cataracts in early stages of life due excessive amounts of UV radiation that wasn’t being filtered out in the atmosphere.…
