Climate change affects everybody and everything all over the world and is impacting how we live our lives. Around the world, we need to tackle the issues of climate change and alter the way we consume and dispose of resources. The pollution we create from factories and vehicles goes up into our atmosphere and creates a barrier of greenhouse gas. When the sun 's rays come to earth and then radiate back out to space, they can’t go back because of the one way, very thick greenhouse gas barrier. The 20 warmest years ever have happened since 1981 and with 10 of the warmest happening within the past 12 years and this is continuing to get worse as the years go on. Solving the problem and stopping climate change would improve our world for future generations. In the past few years, our theme of having a white Christmas in Toronto is not impossible but somewhat unlikely, however, it is not only Toronto that suffers from these effects. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass and are melting, making the water level globally rise. Greenland lost 150 to 250 cubic kilometres of ice per year in 2002 and that lasted until 2006. Antarctica lost 152 cubic kilometres of ice between the years 2002 and 2005. Global sea levels rose about 17 centimetres in the last century because of melting ice caps. Small islands and cities like New Orleans will be underwater if the ice caps continue to melt. Eventually, almost half of Russia, Australia, South America and almost all of Europe will be covered in water. This would kick off the “walk to work Wednesday” campaign and local businesses would be encouraged to serve coffee, breakfast sandwiches and other treats to people on their way downtown to work. I feel that his would be a great initiative in building city pride while fighting climate change. Who knows, we might be able to spread this across Canada, city by city. If that happened, the whole world might notice our desire and initiative to combat climate change.
Also, I would like to implement a lobbying campaign aimed at our government which would ask the Canadian government to put pressure and enact enforceable law against countries that still burn coal as well as nations which have been slow to adopt voluntary factory shutdowns to stop emissions and smog, for example, China and India. By lobbying our government we can help Prime Minister Trudeau push his bold climate change agenda with strengthened support from the citizens of Canada. I believe with these efforts we can make change and raise awareness on the effects of climate
