As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…
Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…
When I was 16 I moved to from California to Texas. During this time, I assume everyone in Texas wears a cowboy hat, boots, talks in a southern accent such as saying y’all and other such stereotypes. I assume the general understanding of Texas from what I was taught as a kid in movies, music, and shows. Once I moved to Texas that that type of thought was used against me, my classmates assume I probably l go to the beach and surf and have met plenty of celebrities when I lived in California. This is an example of REPRESENTATIVENESS HEURISTIC to judge or presume a someone or something relying on past experiences and mental representations to a new situation creating a particular group.…
I recently transitioned out of the military and was able to move back home to Colorado. My wife and I had been praying for a smooth transition and everything up to this point has been just that. Our move out here was stressful however. We had a good amount in savings but I had not found a job yet and my wife was going to be leaving her job very soon. I started receiving offers for work out in Colorado.…
Have you ever been to another country so beautiful before? I was born in India and I moved to Oklahoma when I was eight years old. I never lived in a city, almost everything was new to me in Oklahoma. When I first saw the garage in houses, tall buildings, I was amazed. When I saw the food, I was like I never seen food like this in my life.…
I was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico and I moved to Jacksonville, Florida. This was a challenging time in my life because I had to get used to Florida's environment , its culture, and its people. New Mexico's environment is dry and hot. When you stand outside you can fee the sun beam on your skin, an the surrounding air is warm. There's mountains and desert landscapes.…
When I was 15, I left my dad and my sister in Kansas and came to live with my grandparents here in Arizona for my mental health. My childhood was quite tragic. I was physically and emotionally abused by my mom until my dad made her move out, and I was bullied at school. Before I came to Arizona, I was having suicidal thoughts on a daily basis and I had just attempted suicide for the seventh time. My dad, who has high-functioning autism, didn't know how to deal with it and made things worse.…
Born in Los Angeles California yet raised in “Drip City” also known as Houston Texas. Though these two environments are quite different, Something that didn't change was the family I would be raised in. Growing up in a family which which has taught me to respect my culture and morals as well as embrace my religion has paved the way for me as an individual to take a more broad understanding of the world. The person I am today reflects not only what my family has made out of me, but my surroundings as well. When moving to Houston when i was 3, my Father stayed in california so that our family had a steady source of income.…
Paragraph My trip to Texas and New Mexico was fun and interesting. I went to Texas and New Mexico in 2014's summer with my family to visit my brother who lives in Texas, and to have vacations too. We went shopping, had barbecues, met people, went to church, and visited some cities such as Dallas, Arlington, El Paso, Ruidoso, and Alamogordo. We also visited some places like the Cowboys Stadium, Wet N' Wild Waterworld, the Museum of Space History, and White Sands National Monument.…
I have been intellectually challenged my entire life. I entered into the gate program in third grade when I moved to Arizona, and since then I have been excelling academically. One of my favorite traits is that I love to help people in need. I am constantly helping people in my classes who don’t understand the material. One of my least favorite traits is that I can get impatient.…
Two thousand five hundred eighty-seven. I could take an eight-hour flight or a casual thirty-seven-hour drive, but no matter what, I am still two thousand five hundred eighty-seven miles away from my home in New Haven, Connecticut. Being a college freshman, trying to juggle class, homework, projects, studying, sleeping, eating, and athletics; finding the travel time to go home is an almost impossible task. Add in the cost of the $600 flights round trip and there is no chance a student can go visit home when they feel a little homesick. I on the other hand had never even fathomed being homesick from the frozen tundra I called home.…
My dad and I got up around 3:30 in the morning and headed out on the seven-hour drive to our house in New Mexico. We filled up every bit of space in our enclosed trailer and began our trip home. By the time we got back to our house in Colorado it was about a sixteen-hour day. Moving back to Colorado turned out to be the best thing that happened to me at the time. I got to play football again even though it was for a short time.…
“Why I Chose Southwest” As a homeschooled high school senior, I am unable to take Advanced Placement courses, which are college-level classes taken at a high school. Students earn college credits by taking an exam at the end of the year. To remedy this, I decided to register at Southwest Tennessee Community College for dual enrollment classes. I chose Southwest for a multitude of reasons: to complete my high school education, to provide challenging courses in preparation for college, and to grant me college credit. I opted to take Pre Calculus, English Composition, and Anatomy & Physiology this semester.…
One cold and dreary day in January, I got home from an uneventful day at school. I never would have guessed what was about to happen or thought that this would ever happen to me. I was just a quiet freshman in high school. My father sat down with my family and told us that we were about to move to Texas. I was both shocked and a little excited to move because I’ve always wanted to go south.…
I am originally from Haiti I came to the Miami on July 22 1998, I was only six years old. Coming to the Miami has a young child, my thoughts were I’m coming to paradise, no tree just beautiful light and highways. My mom had signed papers for my step mom, so I came with my stepmom and my two year old little brother. Has a young child coming to a new place, although in my thought I was coming to a new world, I was curious and full of life. I didn’t know what to expect, has I step out of the airport this will be my new home, I left a lot of my friends behind, am I going to fit in, am I going to make new friends, those was some of the questions I was asking myself and worried about.…
