I remember him, saying sometimes we didn’t sleep going from one job to another, all I wanted to know was what is so good about Miami and why was I removed from home to come here. When I got to my new house, my dad showed me my room, it was designed in pink I had a Barbie sheet on my bed with a white dresser, I instantly jumped on the bed and hugged my dad and said think you daddy it look nice I love it, he hugged me back and said I have a surprise for you. Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

My Family immigrated to the United States when I was just two years old. Growing up in an unknown place surrounded by a foreign language was difficult to say the least, if not for me then for my hardworking parents. This may have not been the most convenient of circumstances being raised in total isolation with no family, but it transformed me into the woman I am today. From this I have been able to appreciate my surroundings more, knowing the things people take for granted in the United States are privileges in other countries. Drivers complain about potholes in the roads, where i think of them as lucky to even have roads.…

My first time in Miami was December 4, 2009. It was a winter morning, but in Miami there wasn’t a hint of coldness in the air. When we first received the news that we were leaving Cuba everyone was excited and when the day finally arrived it was a little less thrilling and a little more somber. Leaving everything behind and moving to a new country was difficult and leaving a lot of our family was worse. “This is for you and your sister’s future” my parents said when we arrived in Miami I believe they were trying to persuade themselves more than us.…

Florida is a land of sun palm trees and sand. Florida being a southern state with sweet tea, Publix, and Disney just a few hours away, had many perks. I had never thought of what it might be like to grow up in a northern area, or just even outside of Florida. Up until my 14th summer I had always assumed everyone lived the same way I did. It had all started when I got accepted to a summer program in Washington D.C to attend a medical forum.…

Living in Olathe, Kansas, a large suburb outside of Kansas City, did not prepare me for the move to Salina. The benefits of living in a larger suburb are that the high schools can really help you prepare for the transition to college level classes. I did not take the help the school gave out into consideration when going to classes. My senior year was when everything clicked into place and I knew what I want to do with my life, and that was flying.…

What started my love of swimming was when I was at a tender age of three my parents took me to Florida, I observed other kids taking swimming lessons and I decided to start swimming right then and there. On top of that, part of my old school’s curriculum was to have swimming once or twice a week. One of the many reasons why my parents and I moved to Florida was because of my love of swimming. Even though I started school with an exorbitant amount of homework, my parents and I swam at an olympic size pool religiously every Sunday.…

My series of rather challenging events seven years ago, when my family moved from Myanmar to the United States. I had just turned nine when my sister received news that she was accepted into UC Berkeley. My whole family was ecstatic as we prepared for our move to San Francisco. People tried to explain to me what it would be like to live on the other side of the ocean. Little did I know, San Francisco and Yangon were polar opposites - one a bustling, concrete city and the other a quiet, somber town.…

From smelling the salty waters by the Florida Keys, seeing all of the green from the stems of green beans growing, the flavor of the freshest eggs you could get from the coop in the backyard, to the avocado tree growing in the backyard, my trip to Florida had become one of the greatest life experiences I’ve had yet. Visiting Florida taught me many skills on being independent, mentally, and how easy and fun it is just to be to yourself sometimes. It all started Christmas eve when I got home to find my presents from “Santa” there before we even went to bed. My parents had planned on taking a vacation to Florida for Christmas break to see my grandparents, but we were unable to also get my parents there.…
