This is in part due to a lack of understanding of what a welder does. The popular encyclopedia Merriam Webster defines welding as “to join pieces of metal together by heating the edges until they begin to melt and then pressing them together” This sounds like a simple task to accomplish but that is far from the truth. The ability to join two metal surfaces together takes knowledge of various aspects including types of metals, material thickness and filler metal material. In researching information in regards to a career in welding the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is an excellent source of current information. The OOH is one of the nation’s most widely used sources of career information. It is a government site that provides details on hundreds of occupations. This information is compiled by the Bureu of Labor Statics. Per The occupational Outlook handbook welding is, “The most common way of permanently joining metal parts.” Welding is used in multiple industries such as shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, as well as thousands of other manufacturing activities. When my father passed when I was twelve and left my mother to rise three boys on her own I felt responsibility to help my mom out. As soon as I was old enough I needed to get the best paying job I could in the shortest amount of time. I decided to take the money I got from graduation and go just a few blocks away to the local welding school. I was able to complete my training in ten months and was immediately hired by the company that sponsored the welding school. At the time I did not pursue this career because I wanted to but out of convenience. I know that welding would allow me to get a good paying job with just a small amount of time
