What welding type is favored above another? Instead of underwater welding, I should focus on Mig welding. They both are used all over and have different qualities that appeal to people in their own ways. These qualities have positives about the job, drawbacks about the job, different opinions, as well as comparisons about each that can be viewed differently by each person.
Underwater welding is a different type of welding for me. It has many benefits that draws me to be an underwater welder. To be an underwater welder, there is no age limit. Along with the age limit, all I need is a welding certificate and to become a commercial diver (“Taking The Plunge”). Underwater welding is only a part of the job. I would also be a commercial diver due to being hired by “leading diving contractors”. The job duties of being an underwater welder are underwater cutting and underwater photography and drafting and inspection as well as fitting and rigging (“Underwater Welding”). Due to these duties, I would make an average of $52,540 and can even earn up to the six-digits with proper experience (“Underwater Welder Job”). Along with the high salary, Underwater welders travel a lot and must explore the surrounding area before doing a weld. The exploration will allow me to know my surrounding environment. The environment will always change with each job and can influence the pay along with the depth. The depth influences the pay because after a certain depth, welders are payed an extra one to four dollars each foot deeper they go (“Underwater Welding”). Like Mig welding, there are also downsides to being an underwater welder. There are always downsides no matter what people do. Like everything else, underwater welding has some downsides. One downside is that the pay depends on the company. Some companies pay by the hour, while others pay after each job. The pay is also influenced by the location and what needs done for the job. Some jobs are offshore and they can last anywhere from April to November before the job is stopped due to the unpredictable weather. If a person chooses to be an offshore welder, the jobs will have long hours and they can be separated from friends and family for weeks at a time. To keep the job, I would need to get certified in other skill areas to impress the employers. The job will have many challenges, the most common are high currents, no visibility, and freezing temperatures. Among other challenges is that each job will look and feel different to me. Another risk is that some equipment is not direct current (DC) but rather applied current (AC) (“Full Guide”). The next risk is the potential for an electric shock by creating a mix of hydrogen and oxygen in pockets (“Welding Science”). Another risk I would have is decompression sickness, while the welding can be in a stable environment, the can’t change the pressure when coming to the surface or the effects of that pressure (“Scuba Diving”). These facts can help understand about why underwater welding is worse for me than Mig welding. Not everyone is meant to be an underwater welder. Underwater welding is great for people who like to explore or try new types of welding. It …show more content…
Mig welding is different for many reasons such as an average salary of $15,000; whereas underwater welding has an average of $52,000. Another difference is that underwater welding salary can change with each job while Mig doesn’t. The next difference is that Underwater welding changes location with each job while Mig stays stationary. While they are each different, they have some similarities. One similarity is that both have various risks while welding such as burns or decompression sickness. They are also similar because they also have a set setting, direct current (DC), that doesn’t change. Mig welding is simple and easy to learn without any experience. Underwater is hard to learn while they need a great physical condition and a diving certification that can take years to get. Comparing this data, it is easy to see that they each have their own benefits and drawbacks; however, Mig is better due to most people not willing to take years to prepare for a job that might not work
