Having a misinterpretation of message between sender and receiver can result in lost time, money and create frustration. Successful businesses retain leaders capable of channeling information, to the organization in a manner that is understood and effective. More importantly, these leaders follow up the communication with a walk the talk attitude. Failure to walk the talk can elicit responses from others that a message was not important. For instance, a supervisor indicates it is critical to use a safety harness when working at a certain elevation. If employees see the supervisor working at these recommended elevations without a harness it can send the incorrect message making it appear that harnesses are not necessary. This in turn can elevate the likelihood of occurrence of an undesirable outcome. Case study one presents a mother requesting her child to clean their room. Toward the end of the week the mother did not feel the child had met expectations. This example represents a miscommunication of expectations and outcomes. The child had believed fulfillment was achieved based on their interpretation of the criteria surrounding clean. This did not align with the mothers definition.
