What is intensive farming?

Farming which is looks to have high yields of crops per acreage of land

What are fertilisers?

Contain nutrients and minerals which are added to soil to increase the nutrients and minerals to the soil.

Name 4 nutrients/minerals which can be found in fertilisers.

Magnesium, Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus.

What is a problem with using artificial fertilisers?

They cause Algal blooms

What is algal blooms?

A rapid growth of microscopic algae in water caused fertilisers.

Explain the stages of how algal blooms occur and affect organisms.

Fertilisers dissolve into water and runs off the fields into rivers and lakes. Water plants and algae grow rapidly. Algal blooms prevents sunlight reaching other water plants causing them to die. Bacteria decompose the dead plants and use up the available oxygen causing animals in the water to die.

A chemical which is sprayed onto crops used to reduce competition.

Pesticides.

What term is given to describe the build up of pesticides in organisms bodies?

Bioaccumulation.

In a food chain, which organisms would be found to have the highest levels of pesticides in them?

The topmost predator.

Name 2 ways to reduce the use of pesticides.

Biological controls and GM Crops

What is a biological control?

The use of an organism to control another organism.

"The insertion of desired genes from one organism into crops" Describes what method?

GM Crops

Lichens and organisms such as mayfly nymphs and rag-tailed maggots are used to look at the pollution levels in air and water. What is the term given to these organisms used to look at pollution levels?

Indicator species
