Why has there been an increasing demand on food production over the last 70 years?
Due to an increase in human population.

Farming which is looks to have high yields of crops per acreage of land

Contain nutrients and minerals which are added to soil to increase the nutrients and minerals to the soil.
Name 4 nutrients/minerals which can be found in fertilisers.
Magnesium, Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus.
What is a problem with using artificial fertilisers?
They cause Algal blooms
What is algal blooms?
A rapid growth of microscopic algae in water caused fertilisers.
Explain the stages of how algal blooms occur and affect organisms.
Fertilisers dissolve into water and runs off the fields into rivers and lakes. Water plants and algae grow rapidly. Algal blooms prevents sunlight reaching other water plants causing them to die. Bacteria decompose the dead plants and use up the available oxygen causing animals in the water to die.
A chemical which is sprayed onto crops used to reduce competition.
Pesticides.
What term is given to describe the build up of pesticides in organisms bodies?
Bioaccumulation.
In a food chain, which organisms would be found to have the highest levels of pesticides in them?
The topmost predator.
