On July 2006, in Ontario, Canada an Animal Control Officer also known as ACO arrived at a 64 year old women’s house on a report of a pit bull barking ferociously. When he looked at the “so called pit” he said “I’m going to be taking “lucky” to be put down due to the ban of the pit bull in the providence of Ontario”. Lucky is actually a Labrador retriever and is licensed with the city. Later on it was verified that he is legal and charges that were pressed on her were dropped. As you just heard, pit bulls tend to be stereotyped as ferocious animals. I am here to prove that they are loving, protective, and obedient companions.
.
The history of pit bulls goes way back. They were originally farm dogs used to pull horses and cattle that were stuck in mud. They would also go with hunters and help lead them to animals. In England, the pit bull was known as “the nanny dog” or “the children’s nursemaid” because of their calm and protective persona towards children.
.
As years passed, pit bulls achieved a position of reference among Americans. A classic children’s television show “The Little Rascals” Have any of you heard of that show before? For those of you that have, did you know that the dog that was featured on their show was a pit bull terrier? Sergeant Stubby, the most highly decorated dog in military history was indeed a pit bull. One of Helen Keller’s many dogs was a pit bull named Sir Thomas.
.
Yet another aspect to look at is how pit bulls are raised. In the 70s, Dobermans were looked at as bad dogs, and then in the 80s, German- Sheppard’s were the bad ones, and then in the 90s, it was the Rottweiler, now it is the pit bull. Pit bulls get a bad reputation because of their irresponsible owners. Many people consider the look and popularity of a breed before thinking about whether or not it works for their lifestyle. Everybody should evaluate their life before taking on the responsibility of a pit bull. It’s not the owner’s life that is at risk, it’s his companion’s life, and he can’t fend for himself.
..
In conclusion, I believe that pit bulls are protective, obedient, and loving dogs because no dog is born with the mindset to attack a human. Each dog takes a part of their owner’s persona. If you see a dog attack or hurt somebody, wouldn't that make you wonder what their owner is capable of when he/she is mad.
