Racial group

describes a category that is set apart and treated differently from others because of perceived physical differences.

Ethnic group

A set apart from others primarily because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns.

Minority group

a subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their own lives than the members of a dominant or majority group have over their own.

Visible minority

A term used to refer to those Canadians who are non-white or are identified as being physically different from white Canadians of European descent (dominant group).

Stereotypes

Unreliable generalizations about all members of a group that do not recognise individual differences with the group

Racialization

the social process by which people come to define a group as a "race" based in part on physical characteristics, but also on historical, cultural, economic factors.

Prejudice

A negative attitude toward an entire category of people, often an ethnic or a racial minority

Racism

- the belief that one group is supreme and all other are inferior.

comprises positive efforts to recruit historically disadvantaged groups for jobs and promotion, and educational opportunities.

the physical separation of two groups of people in terms of residence, workplace, and social events.
