A mental illness that causes strange thinking, abnormal feelings and unusual behaviour

Diagnosis of Schizophrenia

Two or more of the following (one must be from first three listed below


- Delusions


- Hallucinations


- Disorganised speech


- Grossly disorganised or catatonic behaviour


- Negative symptoms


Must have marked reduction in functions


Symptoms must be present for 6 months

Negative symptoms include restrictions in the:


- Range and intensity of emotional expression


(affective flattening)


- Fluency and productivity of thought and speech


(alogia)


- Initiation of goal directed behaviour (avolition)


- Ability to experience pleasure (anhedonia)


- Lack of interest in social interactions (asociality)

Epidemiology of Schizophrenia

- Occurs in all societies


- About 0.7-1.5% of the population suffers from


schizophrenia at some time in their lives (rates


vary across studies, cultures and ethnicities)


- In 3/4 cases the disorder occurs between 15


and 45 years


- Boys' first psychotic break usually occurs


between 18-25


- Girls' first psychotic break usually occurs between 25-35
