The Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) uses technology to detect items that contain low atomic numbers (Macedo, 2015). It is used mainly used to scan vehicles and was noted as being able to see through one’s clothes. This van is pricy, ranging in cost from $729,000 t0 $825,000. The manufactures, American Science and Engineering (AS&E), may be viewed as money hungry as they do not limit or release information regarding those who have purchased the vehicle. With nearly 500 units being sold, the only purchasing information released is in regards to the destination, i.e., buyer in the Middle East, Germany, and various other locations. One would hope that this item is not being sold outside of the law enforcement community. According to Macedo, this vehicle have good benefits in assisting the law enforcement communities with drug bust by scanning cars and persons and home in which illegal activities are occurring (2015). The ZBV is mainly for car search, but can scan building with light exterior features. It cannot scan and tell the ethnicity of an individual, but does show the image of a silhouette. In our society police officers have been known to racial profile; therefore this leads one to suspect that one’s race may be assumed by the silhouette on the ZBV scan
