Not only doesn’t Winston have to be aware of his movements, he also has to keep volume at an appropriate level and not make any suspicious noises. Those watching from the screen can hear just about anything that is going on inside the homes of the residents, and if suspicious noises are made, BB may assume something inappropriate is going on and may scrutinize. The age of the mansions don’t help as well; the pipes are bad, the floors are squeaky, and minimum movements can put a watcher on edge. So not only does Winston have to be conscious of his movements, but he also has to be aware of how hard he is making those movements. There was a place where Winston was able to not be seen, but unfortunately he was still able to be heard. “Winston was able to remain outside the range of the telescreen, so far as sight went. He could be heard, of course, but so long as he stayed in his present position he could not be seen.” (6). Though Winston had this hiding place where he could do almost whatever he wanted he still has to be very mindful of his volume. Even in his hiding space, Winston was nowhere near safe from surveillance, because not only are they monitoring his movements and sounds, they are also keeping tracks of what he is thinking. Another correlation between BB and today’s NSA that can be made includes the controversial practice of wiretapping. Wiretapping is a procedure that includes monitoring telephone and internet conversations through third party, habitually clandestinely. The legal procedure of tapping is known as lawful interception. Government has claimed and continues to claim that they use this procedure to prevent terrorist attacks. When the fear of terrorists’ attacks was conspicuous and alarming, the practice was deemed necessary and gladly appropriate. Now that the panic is not as plausible, one would assume that tapping is no longer obligatory. Yet the government continues to invade our personal lives through this procedure for reasons unspoken. Another thing that Winston has to be especially conscious of, which is something that can be very unavoidable of, is his own mind. There are a group of spies, also known as “Thought Police” who punish thought crimes committed by thought criminals. Using the surveillance as well as a form a psychology, these secret police have to ability to scope out suspicious members who may potentially challenge their authority. Because Winston has that special area in his home where he can’t …show more content…
This procedure can be quite noticeable because once you visit a site for example, Nike.com, and go to a site like Facebook, an ad for a Nike product will consistently appear. Though the method is used for website owners to monitor the vigor of their site, government has taken it to another level by using it as a highway into our thoughts. We use the internet every day, with blogs, vlogs (video blogs), and the highly trending use of social media. We put our positions, feelings, and thoughts online to share with the world. This makes us conscious of what we write and aware of whom reads it, but unconscious of the fact that everyone interprets things in different ways, and that someone can be a person watching for suspicious things said. Therefore even though we have the freedom of speech, we should still be wary of how we say or write things to avoid any unnecessary
