One example that was considered “true” in the story is that Mayella Ewell was “raped” by Tom Robinson. During the trial, Mayella testified that she asked Tom Robinson to do an errand for her and when Tom entered the house, he took advantage of her. But in reality, this never happened and was just a made up story by Mayella. This was mostly judged due to his color more than evidence because this trial was in the 1920s and racism in the south was still a thing. But in reality , with all the evidence that was presented during the trial , it couldn’t have been possible for Tom Robinson the one who “raped and beaten” Mayella because she was beaten by someone with a left hand most likely and Atticus shown the people in the court that Tom lost his left hand during an accident. In Atticus’s speech during the trial , he gives an idea on who he thinks actually beaten Mayella “Her father saw it, and the defendant has testified as to his remarks. What did her father do? We don’t know, but there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led most exclusively with his left.”.
