Mayella is a woman, and Tom Robinson is a man. In document B “(DBQ Mayella 15) , we all know Mayella is a woman. In their situation, because Mayella is a woman and Tom is a man, it makes the story much different if they were both men. An average woman is much more likely to be physically weaker than an average man. This gives Mayella the advantage in the debate. A man should not touch or lay a hand on a woman. Also in document E (DBQ Mayella 21), Tom is a man willing to help Mayella. Why would Tom Robinson be so anxious to do a woman's chores? Tom Robinson claims he just felt sorry for Mayella. This was all happening during the 1930’s. A black person and a white person were not liked being seen together. In document E”(DBQ Mayella 21), we continue on about why would a black man feel sorry for a white woman? In this time period, people would not see why a black man would almost ever feel sorry for a white woman. It would only seem like the black man wanted to do something more than just feel sorry for her. Also in document D”(DBQ Mayella 19), the court would believe the Ewells because the color of their skin. Tom Robinson claims he was not scared to face up to what he did, but he is scared to face up to what he did not do. Lastly, in document B”(DBQ Mayella 15), Tom Robinson will be convicted even though there is more evidence that he is not guilty. Mayella was said to be beaten on the right side of her face. If she was beaten on her right side of her face, the person beating her must have been left handed. Atticus threw a cup at Tom to catch. Tom caught it only with his right hand. Tom claimed he could not use his left hand because as a child his left arm got caught in a cotton machine and tore his muscles. Therefore, Tom could not have beaten Mayella. Then, Atticus told Mr. Ewell to write his name on a piece of paper. Mr. Ewell is left handed. That goes to show that even when there was evidence that Tom did not beat Mayella, because Tom is black, he was still
