What Determines if You are Guilty or Not?
Currently around the world, there have been many topics circulating about race, such as the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement promotes minority justice by trying to reduce the number of police brutalities in society. Recently, there have been a lot of this going around such as the Terry Edwards case. In Terry's case, he was put behind bars for something he didn't commit. He had substantial evidence proving his innocence, but the jury saw the other way. Another case is the case of Duane Buck. He was found guilty of murdering two people in 1995, but his case was recently reopened and he was found innocent. However since it was a unanimous vote, …show more content…
Bob Ewell, Mayella’s dad was pressing charges and hoped to give Tom the death sentence. After hearing the prosecution team's side, Atticus provided substantial evidence that this crime never happened, there was no doctor that was rushed to the scene, no one heard her yelling, and Tom clearly couldn't have done it since he never went in there without permission and he couldn't have choked her since one of his hand was useless because of a cotton gin accident. After 3 hours of debating, the jury finally chose the verdict that Tom was guilty. After the case, the jury did not have any reason why they declared Tom guilty, they just went on the fact that he was black. Another fact that supports my case is the quote “leaving post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him and threatened to kill him.”page number!!!! This quote happened after the court case. He yelled at Atticus and was mad about how he was defending a black. He also mentioned that he was guilty since he was already black. This supports my Essential Question because both the jury and Bob just assumed that Tom was guilty because of what he looked like, what he wore, and not by how he acted, or the …show more content…
It was published by the Associated Press. “Buck was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend and another man in 1995.” Buck was convicted of two misdemeanors back in 1995. The defenders team provided a lot of evidence supporting
“Is texas about to execute an innocent man?”
The way a jury works is that people are selected by random. Then the prosecution team gets to interview the jury and has the power to kick some out, so there will be no biased votes. For instance if the suspect is a police officer and one person on the jury is a former police offcier, they will be excused because they might vote in favor just cause of their job. Another reason a person may be kicked off the jury is if they have former connections with them. SO what does this have to do with this case?
From these three pieces of evidence, we can clearly see that people now and in the past have manipulated court scenes, juries, and lawyers just to prosecute lives that are innocent. They aren't even looking at the evidence, but they are looking at what the suspect looks like, what they look at, and what skin color they have. This justice system is not solving equality at all, it is just proving that black lives don't matter.
