What is fear? Fear is what you see when you walk into the courthouse in Maycomb, Alabama in a 1930’s court trial during the Great Depression. Mayella Ewell shakes the town with accusing an African American named Tom Robinson of rape. Mayella has power and that will be shown throughout her life and what people have said and done to her. Mayella’s power is shown by class, race, and gender in Harper Lee’s book To Kill a Mockingbird.
Mayella’s race gives her the most power when it comes to Tom Robinson so called raping her because people will all of a sudden think he did just because he is an African American. Document two D says “... I ain’t ever seen any jury decides in favor of a colored man over a white man ...”. It shows that people in the 1930’s discriminated based on skin color. And as can be seen, since Tom Robinson was a colored man, it would have been hard for him the win a trial case over Mayella Ewell’s father.

Document three B says “... Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led almost exclusively with his left…” and document two E says “ ‘ you’re a mighty good fellow, it seems- did all this for not one penny?’ ‘ Yes, suh. I felt sorry for her…’ “ . This shows that people knew what was going on when they saw Mayella covered with bruises, including Tom Robinson, but didn't want to get involved so they kept quiet. And as can be seen, since no one wanted to get involved that made Mayella accuse Tom Robinson of rapeing

Before the story has begun, the African American is already accused of raping a white, nineteen year old Mayella Ewell. Many townspeople of Maycomb believe that Robinson is not responsible for his crime because he is a hard-working and well-respected man. On the other hand, they disrespect and distrust the prosecutor, Mayella Ewell, because she belongs to a poor, disgraceful “white trash” family who lives by the town’s dump. The second evidence that proves Tom Robinson’s innocence is found in Mr. Ewell’s testimony on the rape. Mr. Ewell, Mayella’s father and one of the witnesses of the incident, tells Atticus, the lawyer of Tom Robinson, that he does not call a doctor for Mayella on that day.…

This was mostly judged due to his color more than evidence because this trial was in the 1920s and racism in the south was still a thing. But in reality , with all the evidence that was presented during the trial , it couldn’t have been possible for Tom Robinson the one who “raped and beaten” Mayella because she was beaten by someone with a left hand most likely and Atticus shown the people in the court that Tom lost his left hand during an accident. In Atticus’s speech during the trial , he gives an idea on who he thinks actually beaten Mayella “Her father saw it, and the defendant has testified as to his remarks. What did her father do? We don’t know, but there is circumstantial evidence to indicate that Mayella Ewell was beaten savagely by someone who led most exclusively with his left.”.…

Mayella’s accusation of Tom raping her comes from her effort to cover her shame of liking a Negro. While saving her honor, she sins by killing a mockingbird in her town. She destroys the life of Tom, a person who is pure, and innocent, and has never harmed her. Atticus makes it clear that Tom “would not have dared strike a white woman under any circumstances” (195), still the court fails to accept so. They are unwilling to accept that a black man felt pity for a white woman, as they let racial prejudice guide their judgement of pronouncing Tom as guilty.…
