The main purpose of this assignment is to analyze my own mistakes, and to improve my therapeutic communication skills with clients by eliminating blocks to communication. For the protection of my client’s privacy, she will be referred to as Ms.B. During my first clinical day at the Cardiology unit I had a great opportunity to bridge the gap between a doctor and a client by providing translation service. As a bilingual nursing student, I was asked by the doctor to be a volunteer interpreter and translate the conversation between him and non-English speaking Ms.B. The conversation went smoothly. Ms.B was about to leave the hospital, and the doctor visited her to arrange the time for discharge process. The doctor obtained the information about client’s expectations, and concerns that should be discussed during the process of leaving the hospital. When the conversation was complete, and the doctor left the room, I looked at Ms.B, and saw her eyes full of tears; …show more content…

Marina: “Tell me more about that.”
Ms.B: “My daughter hates me.”
Marina: “Hates you? Oh… go on…”
Ms.B: “She always yells at me. When she visits me, she’s always angry at me.”
Marina: “How often does she visit you? Is she helping you at home?”
Ms.B: “Yes, she helps me a lot, and she visits me almost every day.”
Marina: “If she is visiting you, and helping you it means she really cares about you right now. Maybe there is something going on in her life that makes her angry?”
Ms.B: “Yes, it is. My husband, her father had died a year ago.”
Marina: “Oh, no! I’m sorry to hear that. Probably your daughter is very depressed now; it should be a hard time for all your family.”
Ms.B: “Yes. My daughter is taking antidepressant medications. My son also talks to me like he is angry or thinks I am an idiot. It seems like they don’t want to talk to me.”
