She could see all the birds in the sky flying very frantically and very freely. Her parents took her to her favorite place to go. She hadn’t been there in almost six months because mother was very busy lately.
When they got to the Garden of Nature ( Katherine’s favorite place to go) There was a sign on the gate that said Whites only. Katherine didn't understand what did this mean? Then Katherine started to cry and slowly in a very sad voice, Katherine asked her mother “ Does this mean I will never get to come here again?”
Calmly, stroking her daughter's hair her mother said “ Not for a while but, someday everything is going to be right and everyone will be able to come and enjoy this place it's just not for a while sweetie. I'm so sorry.”
Then her father took her in his arms and carried her back to the house and kept telling her the whole way it's all gonna be ok. When Katherine got home her father set her down on the couch gently and her mother said to her.“Katherine have you ever noticed that you and Amanda are a different color?” “Yes” answered Katherine “Well the law states that we can only be with people of the same color unless you work for them. If we got a job that Amanda’s parents then you two could possibly play, but we don’t. Do you understand?” explained her mother in a kid-friendly way so Katherine could understand. Since Katherine was only eleven she kind-of understood. “So you're telling me I can’t play with or even talk to Amanda ever again because I’m black and she’s white?” asked Katherine worried about the answer her parents will give her. “Yes, I am. I don’t make the rules. Someday, if we can stop whites from these awful rules that they are making, then yes, someday you will be able to, but for now, yes, you can’t play with Amanda.” said her mom with a very calming voice. “NO! This can’t be! Why?” said Katherine with a small crying leap in her voice “Honey! I don’t make the rules. I wish I would never have to say this, but it’s all with government and a bunch of things you won’t understand.” gently said her mother “Ok.” That’s all Katherine said because she knew better than to smart talk back to her mother and that’s why her and her parent have such a good bond in life. Then Katherine walked upstairs to her room as she read the daily news The headline said Rosa Parks in Jail for Ignoring A White! Now Katherine started to understand that new laws were passed. They made Blacks not as appreciated by everyone like whites are. Also that Blacks were being judged because of their color. She was kind of starting to understand, but she knew that she just had to study it more. Katherine was curious about what was going on and if her parents weren’t going to tell her everything she would just have to figure …show more content…
