The theory I feel I connect most with in regards to how I will practice counseling clients is Adlerian theory. This theory of practice resonates with me due to the humanistic aspects of its philosophy believing that every individual is striving to achieve their true potential through self -actualization. Adlerian theory is also centered around the fact that as humans we are social beings and that within each individual is a drive to be connected with others; this drive for connection is expressed in different life tasks ranging from our relationship with others, occupation, as well as love and sex. A stark contrast to that of the Adlerian/Humanistic theory, existential theory is based on the theory that as humans we are alone in the world yet we do not need to fear this realization but rather realize we as individuals have the freedom to assign meaning to our life. This theory is centered on four given facts of existence, the inevitability of death, freedom/responsibility of choice, existential isolation, and meaninglessness. Through the use of techniques such as reflecting feelings, encouraging, paraphrasing, and summarizing, I will work to help the client lead themselves in realization of their issues and to more positive solutions by encouraging them to set goals for their time in therapy. My role will be to support the client by actively listening to their problems and helping them to see the positive aspects to their life rather than just the negative.
The client’s relationship with others in their life will be an area of concentration for me due to my Adlerian and existential approach. Client’s will be encouraged to strengthen their relationships with important figures in their life that they have a close supportive relationship with; and for the more conflicting relationships I will try to help the client to find some resolution to those dilemmas if possible, and if not a better way of viewing the relationships.
Other things I would consider when working with a client would be a client’s ethnicity. If they are from a culture or ethnic group different from my own I may want to work to be more open to their culture and try not to rush to a judgment of a behavior I find unusual because it might be common in their background and not in my
