“The Story of an Hour,” “The Ledge,” and “The Crucible” all feature female characters who are faced with difficult internal challenges. In “The Story of an Hour,” we have Mrs. Mallard who yearns for freedom but cannot grasp it. In “The Ledge,” the fisherman’s wife often wonders what it would be like if she found another lover. Finally, in “The Crucible,” we have Abigail Williams who is in love with a married man who doesn’t want her. These three characters possess different traits and personalities, but what makes them similar is that they all seek the answer to the same question: what if? The problem was that she was desperate for love from a married, respectable man. Her forbidden thought of loving this man, John Proctor, killed not only his wife, but him as well. She killed her lover and she blackened her name even more. Abby wasn’t smart with her choices. If she left the man alone and if she didn’t cry witchcraft, John, his wife, and many others would have remained alive and she wouldn’t have worsened her reputation. She expressed her thoughts well enough and that’s what intensified the situation. It’s different for her because instead of remaining quiet, her future problems would’ve gone away. “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!” She wanted him as if he were a necessity to her. Everything could’ve been different if only she’d let him

In The Crucible, the characters Reverend Hale, Reverend Parris, and John Proctor are dynamic characters that undergo important and life changing experiences.…

The roles of women reflected in the late nineteenth century up until the 1960’s were known to be portrayals of the perfect housewife or of one who lacked status. Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” and Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” both represent the gender role that was expected of woman in their time period and their restrictions to having their own identity. Mrs. Mallard and Girl are similar because they both lack their own true identity and have expectations from others as to how they should act and who they should be. A common theme shown in both stories is repression.…

Furthermore the author gives us a glimpse into Abigail 's first plan to get kill off Goody Proctor so it is not hard to infer how willing she will go to make John hers which we can assume is how she came up with her second excuse/plan to make Elizabeth gone once her first idea failed. In most people 's opinion you’ve got to be really desperate or committed to something, if you can accuse an innocent person of witchcraft knowing what will most likely happen to that person and don 't feel an ounce of remorse for what you have done. Proving Abigail doesn’t care what happens to anyone as long as in the end she gets John Proctor. Not to mention no one had any suspicions of witchcraft in Salem until after the girls danced in the woods and Betty and Ruth fell “ill”.…
