Technology's Influence On Myopia

Influence by technology, Myopia has emerged in the hearts of man. The American people have developed this mentality of it is all about me. Sayings like “YOLO’ and “Let me take a selfie,” show just how self-absorbed our culture truly is. People care way too much about themselves and their own wants rather than about the needs of others. Lynn Sherr wrote an article that speaks about this sense of entitlement that Americans have developed. They think that they have a right to things and deserve to be treated a certain way in that they perceive themselves as being flawless. She even includes some scenarios that show just how big brained and self-absorbed people are. She says, “Entitlement: the sense of so many in our me-centric society that the world owes them something for nothing. Like parking in the handicapped slot. ‘I’ll just be a sec!’ coos the lithe young brunette, sliding out of her car to retrieve her oh-so-urgent dry cleaning while an arthritic senior citizen circles the block” (Sherr). She addresses how inconsiderate and negligent people can be. She goes on to tell another story about a student who thinks they deserve exceptional grades even though they didn’t put in the effort. Lynn Sherr says, “Entitlement: the ‘I’m special’ attitude of a generation of students who insist that teaches elevate their grades. ‘I came to all my classes,’ they whine. ‘Why didn’t I get an A’” (Sherr)? This is another scenario that shows how students think they should receive excellent grades for just showing up, but not doing the actual labor and work, and therefore they don’t deserve the good grade. She even goes on to say that, there is a link the relationship between narcissism and entitlement; And it is extremely damaging to others. This is so true; narcissism is an obsession with oneself and one’s physical appearance. People who care a great deal about their identity and what others think about them, tend to be self-absorbed and expect people to treat them like royalty. Media and technology continues to make it hard for parents to communicate with their children. The children are so absorbed with technology, and it affects them physically, mentally, and psychologically. Media and technology have caused a heart of fear to grow in young children. Barbara J. Wilson talks about the connection between children’s emotions and the media they use. She goes on to discuss how children learned about emotion through the experience of characters on TV shows and TV programs. She specifically describes how media, with an aggressive twist to it, influences young children to respond in ways that are aggressive and filled with anger (Wilson). She speaks to the fact that: “Children under the age of six spend more time watching television than they do playing outdoors” (Wilson). It has caused Americans, and people in general, to be lazy and impatient. Fast food uses technology to give people their food ASAP, so they do not have to wait. Fast food, with the help of technology, has made it possible for people to grab food to go at any point and time, without having to wait a few minutes. It has affected the ability for parents to be able to effectively teach and communicate with their children. Technology captivates the hearts and minds of youth; completely captivating their attention and distracting them from the important moments of life. And technology and media are the main sources of influence for teenagers. Technology has become like solitary confinement. It has trapped the hearts and minds of people, and kept them from interacting with others face-to-face. Social media and technology causes depressive thoughts and antisocial behaviors to develop in Americans. It creates this virtual reality that everyone has a more perfect life. It creates jealousy and envy in man’s heart. Everyone is constantly comparing themselves to social media users, as a result of the influence of technology.
