Strengths: Why People Make New Year Resolutions

Many people want to turn a new leaf whenever the new year starts. They will have new dreams, want to accomplish better goals in life, and will have new enthusiasm. Some goals could be losing weight, learning a new language, writing a new book, or streamlining their financial help. It just happens to be that people find it hard to lose their old habits. There are many factors that influence why many people fail to continue their new year resolutions. Some fear that they will not be able to accomplish their goal in the given time while others struggle to find a deeper sense of their goal; but the main point is that people find it hard to maintain a discipline when they make new year resolutions, and this cannot create room for improvement. …show more content…
According to the article “My Resolution to Practice Daily Mindfulness” Laurene Powell Jobs talks about how her new year resolution was to be mindful of the things around her. She goes on as to say the things she does, like founding an organization and fostering social and economic progress in marginalized communities, provides a source of strength and clarity and helps contribute toward her mindfulness. Everyone has ambitions at the beginning of a new year but they fail to recognize as to why they are working towards to it. In this case, mindfulness has made Laurene to shift her attention and awareness towards the present and has helped her to embrace it. Like this, Donna Karan, the founder of Urban Zen and the author of the article “ To Find Calm In the Chaos”, explains the main purpose of her life: to be calm and happy with her family. When her husband died, Donna tried to give him a christmas gift of 10 acres to build a house. This was an attempt to keep her family together. She built the house and is now trying to keep her children together and happy even though they are grown. As every year progresses, Donna keeps on making attempts to create a calm and happy life with her family and is far doing better. Having a deeper sense of purpose are good for both of these authors because they are able to be engaged in their life.
