Personal Narrative: Coach Centric Leadership

Since attending UNLV I have heard a lot of professionals, alumnus, and professors “keys to success” but one that seems to come up time and time again is just how important it is to be a leader. There are several kinds of leadership including servant, autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire. Brett Shannon talked to us about what it means to be a coach centric leader. A coach centric leader is someone in whom leadership seems effortless, a positive attitude is contagious, and sees that every interaction is a possibility for teaching. Mr. Shannon shared with us the twelve talents required to be a successful and confident coach centric leader. The first talent required to be a successful coach centric leader is an acute awareness of self, knowing how to stay true to yourself and what your morals and values will set you up with a strong foundation of leadership skills. The second talent is to challenge perceptions and interpretations which relates directly to the first University Undergraduate Learning Outcome(UULO) of intellectual breadth and life-long learning. This UULOs goal is to integrate different perspectives into the way that everyone thinks on a regular basis. When you integrate these different perspectives into the way you think you are challenging traditional perceptions of the way things should be. Talent three is to think like a visionary. Brett said “you don’t know if you don’t try”. I can apply this talent to my life by learning to play tennis. When I was younger I wanted to play tennis because all my family members and older cousins played. I told myself constantly that I couldn’t do it and I would never be able to keep the ball in play. My mom signed me up for tennis lessons, and told me the same thing- you don’t know if you don’t try. I ended up loving the sport and playing for the years to come and being on the varsity tennis team at my high school for all four years. The fourth talent is to create alignment. I believe this means to create connections for everything important to you, this will create a strong foundation as you try to achieve goals and dreams. The fifth and sixth talents are very important and play directly off of each other: act decisively and engage others. Mr. Shannon emphasized to make the best decision which may not always be black or white-right or wrong. Whatever decision you make it is important to include others and engage them in discussion before making the decision. Every decision or choice we make impacts those we know and those we don’t so it is important to consider their feelings and circumstances. Talent seven is to possess powerful energy. One of my favorite quotes that I believe Brett could add to his presentation is by Oprah Winfrey: “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” Talent eight is to use emotional intelligence when making decisions. …show more content…
I believe you can apply this to the 4th UULO which is global/multicultural knowledge. It is important to learn about other cultures and your place and effect in them. When I traveled to France two summers ago I went through a kind of culture shock where I realized that everything I did in the USA affected others, not only in other towns but on other continents. I realized that this world is not just us, and every action has a reaction on someone else. The ninth talent is to communicate dynamically. Which very obviously applies to UULO number three; developing a good sense of communication. The ability to communicate well is often a deciding factor in job interviews and internship interviews. Without communication, nothing can be successful. Think of a restaurant, if the patron doesn’t tell the server, and the server doesn’t tell the cook, and the cook doesn’t record it for the bookkeeper, the business will quickly fail. Being able to communicate successfully in different ways with different people means success not only in the business world but in your personal life. UULO 2 is inquiry and critical thinking which in my opinion on example is the ability to see patterns and trends in people, business, and the economy. Seeing patterns is the tenth talent, this is important because it is crucial that leaders can predict what may happen to be better prepared.
