When Starr is afraid to speak up for Kahlil. It appears in chapter 11 when Kenya had to talk to Starr because she wasn’t speaking up for Kahlil, and if it was the other way around, Kahlil would be the one to speak up for someone that was important to their life. On page (198) Kenya says “Fucked up part about this? That Kahlil I know would’ve jumped on TV in a hot sec and told everybody what happened that night if it meant defending you. And you can’t do the same for him”. This shows Kenya is mad at Starr for not saying anything, and not telling people what had actually happened. It was hard for Starr to finally speak up for Kahlil, even though she snitched. But that was her way of telling the world that they don’t know anything about Kahlil. And she finally said who Kahlil really was. Starr doesn't want people assuming that he was a bad person. Additionally, when Starr says, “What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be? This shows that it is hard for some people to actually speak up, sometimes you need support from others to know that you're not alone. Starr needed support from multiple people. This also shows that when you speak up, you know that some people are not going to take your side if you don’t say the right thing. That's why you have to have confidence and hope that people will understand where you're coming from. The theme for the Hate You Give is speaking up. This shows that this is why we have a voice, to speak up when you need to know and have others know who you are and let the world know that you are speaking up for your rights. It shouldn’t be any different. The theme of Speaking up appears in “The Hate U Give”, when Starr had to go on TV and tell them what actually happened to Kahlil, she had to be brave even though she could barely say anything because she was scared to
