Definition of leadership has been defined by different people with different ways. Thus, what is the concrete definition of the word “leadership”? Each of us will have our own different answers. In the dictionary, the word “leadership” has been defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organisation or the ability to do this. Leadership is not a quality but it is an individual’s behaviour. For me, leadership is an act of persuading or influencing people to achieve a common goal.
“Leadership is the ability to evaluate and or forecast a long term plan or policy and influence the followers towards the achievement of the said strategy” (Adeoye Mayowa, 2009)
A leader is someone who shows a path or leads. A leader not only reacts positively but also helps other members of the group to see the brighter side of the picture. A leader can be seen in every sphere of life whether in organisations, in schools, in family, in various sports in form of a captain or coach etc. Even during my school time there was class representative who acted as a leader in the absence of the teacher. He was the one who took care of all the needs of the class. My father is a leader of my family. He is simply a great inspiration to me. Not only at home but at his workplace too he is praised by his team for the decisions which he makes. Each leader leads by an example and good leaders have a unique blend of vision and certain attributes which make people follow them. But what makes a person a good leader? Each leader possesses some traits which are required for a person to become a successful leader. Integrity: I believe the supreme quality for leadership is integrity. A leader always acts open what he says. A leader is meant to keep promises and held responsible for hi decisions. Adaptive: How do you handle yourself in an unexpected or uncomfortable situation? An effective leader will adapt to new surroundings and situations, doing his best to adjust. Good Communicator: As a leader, one must listen...a lot! A leader should be willing to understand the needs and desires of others. A good leader takes into each person’s suggestion, considers all options, and then chooses the right path. Open –Minded: A strong leader will welcome all the options available

A leader acts as a key initiator to each task.

Some additional positive characteristics may be required for leadership depending on their field of work.

A leader has a responsibility of organising and managing work in a team. Thus, the responsibility of team is to provide full support and co-operation to his leader. Each team member should have an inner sense of understanding that they have a particular role to play in their work. A leader may point out the mistakes of his team members so it is duty of each member to work hard and overcome their weakness. A team should always work as a unit in order to achieve success.

Leadership can be situational. Like in case of Mahatma Gandhi it was the demand of the situation which made him a leader. He is considered as a very calm yet effective leader who made many followers.

The nature of leadership depends more on the circumstances. Is leadership being applied to a young or to a mature society? Is it business, government or a movement? While in some situations you might need more of a visionary leader, in others a “courageous” leader might be what you need the
