Moving image -video- has evolved from a simple format, to an apparatus which allows individuals to manipulate the format of a video. Individuals are now able to cut and paste frames from any given video. This new digital literacy allows individuals to analyze the content of videos, that otherwise wouldn’t be possible with the simplistic video format from decades ago. Being able to analyze the content of videos is crucial to today 's generation of video editors. They have the ability to create video blogs and/or short movie clips. Without having the ability to rewind and fast forward, video editing wouldn’t be possible; neither would the hobbies or jobs of video editors. The evolution of this digital literacy is possible by the control individuals have over it. Individuals want or at least want to think that they have control over a product or tool. Hence, the functions of video editing are crucial to its existence. By the visual aesthetics of a video, any person is able to record what makes them feel happy, and watch it over and over again for their own pleasure. By having the ability to do this, moving image is why “video literacy is our growing ability to capture ideas that are difficult to represent in text” (Thompson 102 ). Thompson is surely right about the growing ability of video editing because it allows individuals to express themselves through moving image rather than text. This digital literacy makes it possible for others to find new ways of expressing themselves. Moreover, video is able to bring individuals together to “[Teach them ] how to collaborate- particularly on a meaningful real life project, ... - is a crucial skill” (Thompson 194). In making this comment, Thompson believes that video editing should be used as a collaborative skill in which individuals work together with someone or something else to record what is meaningful to their lives. Even though some individuals may not identify with the meaning of certain videos it is totally fine, since each video transmits a unique message to a certain audience. Therefore, video editing is indeed a literacy that allows each individual approach it in a particular way. The development of this literacy has enhanced video editing to accommodate the experiences of every individual. Video editing has allowed communication to be expressed in different ways. No longer does communication have to be completely verbal. Now communication is able to be expressed through moving images. Being able to comprehend the meaning of communication through moving images serves “as a mode of expression” (Thompson 102). In making this comment, Thompson wants the public to understand that there are various ways of communicating. However, through moving image many individuals are able to find themselves. Communicating through moving image calls for the right place and time. An individual is able to express themselves if they record what is meaningful to them. For instance, the use of video editing has allowed me to express
