In “Disturbing the school to prison pipeline” article it described the range of circumstances that children face while funneled out of public schools and into the criminal justice system. The article stated how concern scholars , educators, parents , students and organization all over the country have experience this as a shocking trend and believed it is something that needs to be dealt with. The Article focuses on activist who have been working to disrupt, reverse and redirect the pipeline. The article focuses on the effort and contributions from the people most affected adults and youth who have been incarcerated or whose lives have been shapes by the school to prison pipeline. This can cause students to have contact with law enforcement at a young age. Even though their intended purpose is to protect students and ensure safety on school campuses, they often handle disciplinary issues that often escalates minor and nonviolent issues into violent, criminal incidents that have negative impacts on students.
Research on this topic proves that it is zero tolerance policies, punitive disciplinary measures like suspensions and expulsions, and the presence of SROs on campus that lead more and more students being pushed out of schools and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.
The sociological idea of socialization also helps us understand why the school to prison pipeline exists. After family and being home, school is the second most important place as a child and adolescents. It is also known to be the second place you spend your time at. It’s a place where children and adolescents learn social norms for behavior and interaction and receive moral guidance from authority figures. By removing students from schools which becomes a way of discipline it also takes them out of this formative environment and it removes them from the safe environment that the school is supposed to provide to
