Running Metaphor

Decent Essays
As I am learning to master the art of running I realize that it takes a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, more than I realized. You have to change your lifestyle, from what you eat and drink to the amount of exercise and training you put in on a daily basis, to the amount of sleep you get and also having the mindset and discipline of a runner. One of the hardest things about being a long distance runner is the realization that you are racing yourself and your watch; trying to beat your previous best time. Just as Oprah Winfrey says “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out what you put into it.” Life can be hard and seem unfair at times, such as when you are running and you beat your own record time, but

While the 541,000 marathon finishers within the US all come from different backgrounds and have distinct differences, they are frighteningly similar in many aspects of their lives. Take for instance the level of training and determination each marathon runner has. Six out of the seven days every week for at least a couple months, they spend their days in the gym and out on the trails. One must build a body of muscle in order to complete the lengthy race – as is demonstrated by the father-son duo of Ken and Will Satre. Don’t let Ken Satre’s age or small stature fool you; he is a machine.…

Every year, thousands of runners all over the world come to New York City to take part in the New York City Marathon. Many of these runners are repeat runners. For instance, on page 139, it says that Bill Rodgers ran this annual marathon four times, and “...won the New York City Marathon 4 times.” After reading the article, “Challenging the Mind and Body: The New York City Marathon,” we learn to appreciate the marathon runners even more. As mentioned on page 139, “a marathon is one of the most grueling events in sports” because it challenges a runner’s mind and body. From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

Since my mom did marathons, I took up long distance running in track. Long distance training set up my foundation for how I run. All the early morning practices running long miles, pushing myself to my limit, really raised my endurance and tolerance level for getting tired. As I gained more experience and confidence in my running ability, I started to win notable races, such as my high schools districts, which started to open the door to having a future in running. There was talk of me running in college, however no coach wanted to take me in just yet with the current times I had.…

The ideology behind life as a race and life as a run is complex and can be depicted differently by each person who comes across it. In simple terms life being a race is competition whereas life being a run is freedom. Comparing life to a race has many different meanings. Life is constantly moving like people running a race. It is competitive, the winner shows dominance and strength to the other runners.…

Having the right mind set is a good start to trying to break a record, telling yourself that you can do it and never putting negative thoughts into your head changes a lot when trying to break a record. All records are broken from someone who doesn't stop working and pushes themselves beyond what a regular runner would do. One of my personal friends Jessica Romero who's also a former distance runner at Brownwood High School has set a new school record for the mile and the 2 mile, having the new record for the mile being a 5:23 and the new record for the 2 mile being 11:35, she gets up…

As a year-round student-athlete, balancing classwork and academics with training has been at the forefront of my entire high school career—freshman to senior year. Though the classes I undertook were rigorous and required an extreme level of commitment and attention, I persisted with my athletic career because it taught me several valuable life lessons. The sport I feel that I am most involved in is Cross Country. While only a fall sport, it is, in my opinion, one of the most physically demanding and difficult sports to compete in. We train by running upwards of thirty miles a week to compete against other teams in 5000-meter races on various terrains.…

I was introduced to running in junior high school. Here, as part of my Physical Education requirement, I was required to run a mile every Wednesday. At first, I greatly disliked running. I would run out breath after 0.25 miles, and would barely finish the mile at a time of 6:26. Over the course of the year, I started to run around my local neighborhood.…
