My Non-Verbal Communication Skills

1.) Up until the other day, I would have rated myself a nine out of ten on communication skills. I am a nursing assistant, so communication is key in my field of work. I use communication such as: dyadic, interpersonal, mediated, organizational, small group, and symbols. Just the other day it was brought to my attention that I needed to work on my non-verbal communication skills with other staff. I guess I have been sending out non-verbal cues that I was not aware of. I am the type of person who gets easily annoyed with people not working. So, instead of asking someone to help me, or talking to the person right away, I let my frustrations build. One of the most important characteristics of communication is that, communication is relational, not individual. No single individual can have an exchange of ideas between themselves, there must be a sender of information and a receiver. Another characteristic of communication is that it is a process. Communication can change with time, such as, your outlook on life. Another person can influence the way another person thinks, and your thoughts may gradually shift from what they use to be, over a process of a life time. Communication is also symbolic. Symbols are used to represent things, processes, ideas, or events in a way that make communication possible. A good example as a symbol for communication is when a dog is scratching at the door. Communication is so important that it is necessary for physical health. People who lack strong relations have a two- three times the risk of early death. Or pregnant women under stress and without a supportive relationship have three times more complication than women with the same amount of stress and a support group. Physical communication is so important for health, but not everyone requires the same amount of physical communication. Identity is another need that is satisfied with communication. Our sense of identity comes from the way we interact with other people, we decide who we are based on how others react to us. Social needs are also meet by communication. Researchers and theorist have identified a range of social needs we satisfy by communicating: pleasure, affection, inclusion, escape, relaxation, and control. These needs would be impossible to fulfill without communicating with others. Some theorists have stated that communication is the primary goal for human existence. Communication is another tool that helps us determine our practical needs. For example, it allows us to tell the doctor where we hurt, or to tell the plumber that the pipe is broken on the toilet, and it needs fixing now.
