Reflection Of My Clinical Experience

Within the first two weeks of clinical, I believe there were a few aspects of my practice that were successful. One of these aspects involved my ability to properly irrigate a nasogastric tube. I see this as a strength because when asked to complete this task by my co-caring nurse, I informed her that I have never done this before, in which she responded by guiding me through the process and answering any questions I had. From this, I was able to correctly irrigate the patient’s tube as well as learn a new skill. Another aspect I believe to have showcased my success as a student nurse occurred when my co-caring nurse showed me how to reset a Sigma Spectrum IV Pump. As I have never used this type of pump before, I was walked through the process of setting the flow rate of a primary line. This process allowed me to gain important knowledge and skills needed during my future practice, thus leading me to the belief that this learning opportunity highlights a successful part of my practice. …show more content…

Although it may take a few weeks to build my comfort level, I can improve upon this aspect by reminding myself that although I am a novice student nurse, I can and must learn how to properly carry out specific nursing duties, not matter how hesitant I may be because I will need to know how to complete these duties in the future. I believe that if I constantly remind myself of this, I will become more comfortable with going outside my comfort zone and thus increasing my success in

November 12, 2015, 8 am third day of clinical, I was assigned to shadow an RN named Senaite who was working at the 300 hall, where most of the client are not bed ridden but there are some who are not mobile. I was asked to check blood pressure of a client. I introduced myself, washed my hands, checked the client’s name, and explained the process. I asked the client which hand he prefers, the client replied “it does not matter for me,” then I checked the blood pressure, but it was too low or abnormally low for someone like him mentally active and alert. While I was checking his blood pressure, he was listening to the radio on his headphone, and flipping between TV stations, which confirmed to me that he was able to express any pain or abnormality.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…

This was my first day of clinical and I was pretty scared. However, I'm glad that I got chosen to be in the X-Ray department. She is now in a 2-year program where she does clinical rotations at Peconic, Brentwood, and Manningville Hospitals from 8-4 through Mon-Fri and all summer.…

Flint, Michigan was a town once filled with a working Middle class and a booming economy but now has a high poverty level and an economy that is close to nonexistent, leaving the town to switch water sources to the local river because it reduced cost. When we were asked to research, and hold a class discussion on the situation going on I was excited to hear fellow classmate’s opinions because I was aware of was going on. Although, I knew about the situation in Flint and could infer that this would have some major effects on the people in the town researching more opened my eyes to many community problems that affect the population's health tremendously. One of my strengths this semester was administering medication. Every medication that I gave I did the three checks and the six rights of medication administration. One time I grabbed the wrong eye drops from the drawer before checking the MAR but when I started the three checks I noticed right away that I had the wrong medication. This showed me the importance of doing the three checks before every medication administration since it is easy to make a mistake. Another strength of mine this semester was being compassionate and empathetic to my patients.…

My first clinical experience was at St. Vincent hospital on a geriatric unit, when I was a second year nursing student. During my time there, nurses often approached me to provide small learning experiences and teach students how to be efficient. When a nurse on the unit asked for help with a bed bath for a patient with whom I was not familiar, I agreed. I wanted to get as much experience as I could. The nurse led me to the patient 's room right away.…
