Today, they seem to be an inherent part of the D.C. cityscape. However, the process to bring them over took many years of collaborative effort, beginning with Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, an American writer and geographer, who would go on to become the first female board member of the National Geographic Society. In 1885, after returning from her first trip to Japan, Scidmore approached the U.S. Army Superintendent of the Office of Public Buildings and Grounds with the idea of planting Sakura trees along the Potomac River waterfront.…

A great injustice has been bestowed upon our Sister in Christ, Anne Hutchinson. The General Court has given Governor Winthrop a bully pulpit to condemn a true guardian of religious liberty. Accused of heresy, she stood before the court defending her right to practice her faith within the confines of her own home, in the company of other like-minded community members. A right for which many of us, including Winthrop, sought refuge in the New World. Such a censure reflects Winthrop’s failure to recognize in Mistress Hutchinson’s teachings the outlines of a religious and political philosophy with its own right to exist (Morgan 1937, 639).…

Short formats such as Anne Carson’s “Short Talks” have multiple creative advantages and keep attention, but the poems also tend to be too short to form a clear thesis if any and makes it hard to create a theme for each of her poems. Advantages such as the retention of attention, but it can also give relevance to her piece by adding references to popular subjects within the era in which the poems were written. Margaret Mead was a popular American writer, cultural, and visual anthropologist. Throughout her career, Margaret Mead has conducted over twenty field trips (Yans-McLaughlin 2000). In addition, Mead’s fieldwork focused on the development and growth of adolescents. The reason why I chose Margaret Mead is because of the tremendous contributions that she has made to the field of anthropology and the public. In addition, I find it very astounding that Mead “offers a resolution of the old apparent conflict between science and humanities through the development of a human science capable of justifying within science both quantitative and qualitative knowledge” (Ruby 2000, 165).…
