But what is radioactive waste? Well, it is a by-product of nuclear power generation or one of it 's other applications, such as nuclear fission or technology. It is hazardous …show more content…
Although at first it seems like an attractive idea to get nuclear waste products off of the planet, the risk that would be involved with the take off of a spacecraft with this cargo would be too high to attempt, because if there were a catastrophic failure in the launch sequence for the spacecraft it could spread radioactive material into the atmosphere and around the world. Ocean disposal of nuclear waste is simply putting nuclear waste in either it 's solid or liquid form into containers and then into the ocean. This method has been banned due to the health problems it can cause for locals and the negative affect on nearby marine life. The sub-seabed or ocean floor disposal method involves having the nuclear waste deposited into torpedoes specifically designed to increase the depth of penetration into the ocean floor and allow the enclosed waste to become embedded under the sediment of the ocean floor, where it will remain undisturbed. However, it is incredibly difficult to recover the waste after it has been submerged under the sediment of the ocean floor, which is why this method is not
