. (10 points) Discuss the classifications of wastes. There are different classifications of wastes: degradable, dissipating, conservative, and solid. Degradable wastes that can transformed to other compounds. An example of degradable wastes are food products. When food products are inputted into the oceans they are broken down by microorganism like into their organic compounds. Dissipating wastes can be dissipated or diluted. Heat is a dissipated waste that once it enters the ocean it dissipates rapidly causing little harm to the ocean. Conservative wastes are wastes that do not degrade easily and when they dissipate their harmful effects are not remove. agencies from carrying and transporting material on their vessels for the purpose of dumping them into the ocean. The only way dumping is allowed is if a permit has been granted, but permits are only granted if the materials that are being dumped may not degrade unreasonably or have the potential to harm humans or the marine environment. The Marine Debris Research, Prevention, and Reduction Act (MDRPRA), is an act that was established to identify, determine sources, assess, reduce, and prevent marine debris and its harmful impacts on the marine environment.

4. (10 points) What is ghost fishing and, what are two possible impacts of it?

Ghost fishing is when commercial fish and shellfish become bycatch to lost fishing nets or fishing gear. Ghost fishing has an economic impact on fisheries because they lose the fish they catch to make profits. Ghost fishing also has a biological impact to its environment because the fish that is lost can no longer be used as a food source to other organisms that consume them and the amount of fish and shellfish that were lost can be so great that these organisms cannot reproduce fast enough for recovery and populations of these animals will become smaller.

(10 points) Compare and Contrast 4 aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) actions to remediate Boston Harbor.

Efforts to clean the Chesapeake Bay took longer to be happen because too many states and municipalities were involved and so then EPA had to step in to help establish the TMDL to help clean the bay. Although in Massachusetts when they first realized that the harbor was terribly dirty the MWRA took immediate action to do something and it was easier to do so because only one state was involved.

The TMDL is referred to a pollution diet because it states that certain amounts of pollutants can still be added to the bay and the water is still considered good quality. As for the MWRA they stopped sewage from being discharged into the harbor so that pollutants would stop being discharged into the

Question #3 Two acts passed by congress, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) were made to control the creation, distribution, and disposal of hazardous waste from cradle to grave. They hold people who have mishandled toxic substances accountable for the damage they have done there is a spill or leakage, both past and present. RCRA seeks to prevent spills before they happen by imposing strict regulations on the handling of hazardous wastes. CERCLA (or the Superfund) main goal is to clean up hazardous sites after a spill has occurred, and generate the money to do so.…

One of the most significant issues in environmental management is meeting the needs of everyone involved. While some management decisions may seem advantageous in terms of environmental sustainability, they may not be desirable for industries and individuals benefiting from this said resource. As such, this is the current case on the eastern coast of the United States where the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is contemplating changes in how menhaden is currently being managed. The more towards better regulation of this fish species is due in part to its substantial role within the Atlantic Oceans food chain, as menhaden is a central component in the diet of larger ocean wildlife as well as often being used as feed by aquaculture suppliers. Therefore,…
