In 2013, the web sites of both the California Highway Patrol and the Office of Traffic Safety posted guidelines for lane-splitting. Specific guidelines also appeared in the California Department of Motor Vehicle’s motorcycle handbook. But, as Alvarez observes, these guidelines were subsequently removed because of complaints that there were no formal laws categorically stating that the practice of lane-splitting was legal or illegal in California (4). Aupetit and his co-authors logically advise that if lane-splitting is legalized, then there can be training classes on how to safely, prudently, and responsibly lane-split (312).
