How to Change Your Name After Divorce: The Complete Checklist

After your divorce is finished, the paperwork is not quite done. Most women choose to change their last name back to their maiden name during a divorce. The best way to do this is have the judge on your case enter a formal order to restore your name. If this wasn’t done, you can go back and have it added in. If you are ready to return to your maiden name, here is the complete checklist with everything you need to know to change your name after a divorce.

Identification
The first place to start is with your identification. When you go to get your new ID, bring a copy of the court order detailing your name change. If you do not have one, you can also often just bring in an old ID or

2. Renew your passport either by mailing it in with the correct forms, or visiting your nearest passport agency.

3. While often overlooked, it’s also important to notify your local post office of your name change, so your mail still gets delivered to the correct address.
Finances
Once you have the proper ID, the next step is to begin changing over all of your finances.

1. Obtain a new Social Security card by filling out the application for a new card online, and mailing it in with the proper documents to your nearest social security office.

2. Contact all of your bank accounts, including business accounts or stock and investment portfolios.

3. Update your name on your credit cards.

4. Call and notify your insurance companies, including health insurance, life insurance, car insurance, and homeowners insurance.
5. If you have any loans out like student loans, a mortgage, or car payments, call up the banks or loan institutions and inform them of your name change.
Property
Your finances are in order, so now it’s time to make sure all of your property is under the correct name.
