Ponithe A Short Story

Great Essays
Ponithea, princess of Chara, had always been a tricky soul. Soon after she was born, she had started shapeshifting into a small bird and flew around her house, annoying her brothers and sisters. Once she had aged and became a young woman, it was no different. As hard as her parents tried, they could not contain Ponithea. When she was sixteen, her parents had finally had enough. Her father, the ruling monarch, banished her to the island of Erimos. She was given a fortnight to pack her things, say goodbye to her family, and leave.
“I shall never forget you, my child.”
“Neither will I, mother.”
“Here, take this, hopefully this will help you until I can save you.”
Ponithea’s mother pulled out a small burlap bag. It jangled as it was set in Ponithea’s warm grasp. Ponithea smiled, just for a moment, in the realization that she still had family that cared, even while her father was being despicable. She wished a farewell to her siblings, and set off on her way. All she carried with her was a little food, a canteen, the ticket to Erimos, and her mother’s gift to her. She had never been outside of the palace by herself before, and took the liberty to look around a while before her boat arrived. As she strolled, she witnessed the same shops that had always been there. Still run by the old men and women who had run them since retiring from their laborious jobs. Suddenly, the loud whistle of a steamboat rang in Ponithea’s ears, giving her a quick rush of adrenaline. In this sudden rush, she transformed into a pigeon and flew towards the boat. She perched on the railing of the boat just as it started to take off. An employee approached Ponithea, and she grew stiff. “Shoo! Get out, pesky bird!” He pushed her legs off the railing, and she was forced to fly away.

Once she regained a sense of direction, the ship had left, far from sight.
“Well, now what am I supposed to do?”, she muttered to herself, shocked and confused.
She tried to visualize the map of the region that had been in her home, but her mind only drew a blank. Knowing that she couldn’t stay in one spot forever, she started flying south, hoping to find dry land before it grew too dark. In the far distance, she heard the call of a ship, but decided it’d be against her own interests. After nearly four hours of flying, she saw a small island and flew with full speed towards it. As she landed, she morphed back into a human and collapsed on the shore, unconscious. Ponithea awoke to a slight peck on her knee and a faint call of a songbird. Her eyes fluttered open, and she saw a dark outline of a young boy. “Are you okay, miss?”, he whispered impishly. “I’ll let you guess”, Ponithea muttered in a sarcastic tone. “Well, there’s no need for your sass, I’m just here to help.” “Alright. Well, who are you, and where am I?” “My name is Elpidos, and you’re in the small village of Proorismos, on the island of Chara.”
“Excuse me, did you just say island of Chara?”
“Yes... Why do you ask?”
“It’s a long story, but how far is the castle?’ “Probably a three days walk away.” “Alright. Do you mind

(A playful writing influenced by A. A. Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh and Beatrix Potter’ Stories) I gaze from my window to see a slight rustle in the conifers, picking up my binoculars with curiosity I notice a wood pigeon fluttering about; my imagination gets the better of me, thoughts rolled into a story. I don’t believe in happy endings; but I will try and write something with a good end to it and no better way can a story be brought to life than through the antics of wood pigeons. There was a group of eight pigeons and in that group there were five males and three females; I know the odds are not looking good for all the males and some will miss out and, of course, it is generally the weaker ones. It was spring, that time of year when…

Even the rich seldom made a fire in the evening, but contented themselves with left-overs from their noon dinner, a little bread and cheese, a few olives, 1
and the usual dried figs. As for the poor, they ate plain bread the whole year around, spiced occasionally with a care- fully crushed raw tomato, or a little garlic and oil, or a Spanish pepper with such a devilish bite to it that it is known as a diavolesco. Christmas in that town was fun, we would have multiple posadas at different friends houses. Posadas are parties done in December in which there is singing and breaking piñatas, and dinner is eaten. One particular December we went to three different posadas, one was with our neighborhood where all the people and kids gathered around the street and we all played and broke the piñata, the kids going crazy when it broke, the sound of falling coins and scrambling kids ringing in the chilly night air. I loved going to my grandparents’ for the posada that they held every year and all of my mom’s 12 brothers and sisters gathered at the house and there were so many of my cousins that I probably didn’t know half of them. There was always an hour taken,…
