Carbon Tax
Global warming has been a major problem since 1980 because it contributes to a steady increase in global temperature. Since the world is releasing a scientifically proclaimed dangerous concentration of carbon emissions, the next few years are crucial to amend the mistakes that the United States has made in the past with the global emissions of carbon dioxide. The best way to address this issue is a carbon tax, a beneficial way to mitigate the effects of climate change and to lower the carbon dioxide emissions in the world. A carbon tax is the taxation of carbon dioxide emissions. Implementing a revenue neutral carbon tax, where profits would be used to offset any costs, would allow for …show more content…
Within recent years, the impacts of this global increase in temperature has caused devastating effects to the natural world with record high temperatures being set daily as well as increasing sea levels. When global temperatures and sea levels increase, the chances of any natural disasters increases as well. Natural disasters have the potential to wipe out millions of people worldwide in floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. In a study done by the CBO, imposing a carbon tax would decrease the total emissions in the United States by 8 percent in the first decade. A minimum reduction of eight percent of emissions within the first ten years proves the taxes necessity by effectively combating issues of climate change. Both British Columbia and Australia have had successful results from carbon taxes. In a two year period Australia decreased its net emissions by 1.4%, the largest decrease that has ever been recorded (Milman). Milman’s report can easily be extended to the United States,
