Why ENF should be a Requirement A peacemaking activists well-known by the name of Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” This quote has a powerful meaning to me that gave me a positive outlook to pursue my goals in education. I think that they should continue teaching ENF1 and 2 at Thomas Nelson Community College. Although the courses are developmental and do not count towards a degree, ENF is a very knowledgeable subject it will help you to become a successful writer, reader, and prepare you for college English. One problem I recognized as a first-term student is that I needed some improvements in this ENF course. I have always struggled with writing and because of the strategies that were provided by my professor, I was able to overcome those fears. I took the placement test to measure my abilities in English to see where I stood. I did not score too well and was placed in ENF. Because of this developmental course I was given the tools and breakdown on what an essay consists of a thesis statement, supporting details, and a conclusion. I was able to utilize the websites online to proofread my essay. One of the sites I used was called …show more content…
I started reading more materials throughout this course. As a result, I was able to increase my score on the DRP. The readings from our ENF book has helped me improve in vocabulary, identify the main topics, and recognize what the passage was about. The lectures and videos taught me effective ways to enhance my reading skills. I find that I am constantly researching words daily in a dictionary or online to have a better understanding of what I am reading. During the first half of the semester for ENC 1102, I believe that my writing skills have improved from ENC 1101; some of which are getting to page length, correctly citing a source, and incorporating how a quote is related to my argument. I still have some errors within my writing that I have not quite figured out how to tackle. Some concepts that I have not gotten down to a tee must be coming up with a thesis statement, basic grammar errors, introducing quotations, and repetition. I have also learned how to distinguish the difference between a personal essay and an argumentative essay with first hand on the two types and how why my grade differed from essay one and two.…

Before I came to De Anza, I was lacking in many things. For example, I switch in between persons in the same paragraph when I was talking about a character. I would add in my opinions like why I think Hamlet wanted to kill his family on an analysis paper, and my sentence structures were all over the place. I would also use the same words over and over again making my essay dull and boring than it already is. I started to feel degraded because I was receiving low scores on my essays.…

Throughout the semester, I was required to write essays for EN 101. In previous years, I wrote mostly the same style of essays, however, this semester I was required to write many different styles of essays. Thus, I was forced to leave my comfort zone for writing and to challenge myself, which in turn helped to improve my writing. My essays that I have wrote for EN 101 demonstrate that I have improved in supporting my thesis, keeping the paper organized, and creating better conclusions.…

English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
