Essay On Writing Has Changed Me

Composition has changed my thinking in more ways than one. Writing is no longer a burden, but an opportunity to expand my thinking. Although I am not great at writing and I have more to learn, I now enjoy exploring ideas and putting pen to paper. I have been challenged almost to the brink of insanity and pushed to the edge but I have grown not only in my studies, but as a writer. My writing process in the beginning of this course was total chaos. My stomach turned cartwheels when I thought about writing. I had no idea what I was doing, let alone how to start an essay. My mind was so bogged down with the thought of failing that I was almost on the verge of a panic attack on many occasions. I was not sure if I was

Not only have I learned how to carry out a conversation through discussions, I have also learned how to compose an essay. When I began this class I was sure I knew how to write a paper and make it sound like I knew what I was talking about. Upon completion of my first essay I discovered just how wrong I was. While there were a minimal amount of errors, the errors present made my essay sound as if it had been written by a child. After making the suggested corrections, I saw just how much my essay improved. I went from sounding like a person just spouting random thoughts, to coming off as an individual who might actually understand what has been stated. I carried the lesson learned from the first essay with me through the next two essays. I did see some improvement in my writing style with the Summary Analysis, however, I found myself backsliding with the Critical Essay. I see that there are still some areas that I need to work on. I am currently having some difficulty in sounding professional. I also have a difficult time not using second person wording, and I would like to improve upon my vocabulary. I have made improvement in my thought process. I am not jumping around as much as I have done

Besides writing this course aided in improving my discussion techniques by having to devise comprehensive analysis during class and engage in the conversations. Before this class I rarely spoke in lectures but the environment made me feel comfortable enough to do so which was one of the most beneficial aspects of the course for myself. Academics has also been something that I have struggled with in the past especially when it comes to writing. In 2004 I was diagnosed with dyslexia and on a scale to 1-10 I was probably at a 9 to how bad I it was. I had no idea how to write. Slowly with the help of many I eventually got the foundation of how to write a simple essay, but its still something I will always struggle with. I would consider myself a very creative person, however when it comes to research papers and stuff of that sorts you might be better off looking at a blank piece of paper because its probably will be better then any essay I write.…

Although my writing has improved, I still need to work to create stronger transitions between paragraphs and new thoughts within my papers. When this semester first started, I struggled to support my thesis throughout the entirety of my essay. My first paper, the narrative essay, is a great example of how I struggled. The topic of this paper was a book that was significant to me. I had a thesis for this paper which stated three different ways the book had impacted me, however I found it challenging to expand upon these three topics within my paper.…

Freshman Composition I’s course objective was designed to help students “focus on developing and expressing ideas clearly and effectively to communicate with various audiences for various purposes and occasions, through written, oral, aural, and visual venues by means of individual and team projects.” Throughout this course my classmates and I reviewed principles of the writing process, including: planning, logical organizational, development strategies, revision, and editing, we were also introduced to rhetorical techniques and vigorous library research. With those techniques, this course has helped my classmates and I develop critical thinking skills like: summary, paraphrase, analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of multiple sources. Before I began this class my writing process consisted of simply being assigned as assignment by my high school english teachers and coming up with an essay at the top of my head that properly fit the space requirement and prompt that I would then turn in the day it was due.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

As I have been typing this essay though I have come to realize that I don’t like writing in the slightest other than for practice, it is too time consuming and it bores me. The part of writing that I seem to struggle with is writing itself. This is due to the fact that I don’t have much to say and once I have finished what I actually have to say I have trouble with coming up with more. The only part of writing that I would say that I excel at is the revision process. I have one writing goal, that being to have better grammar, other goals are financial.…

I have also learned that the spelling and grammar check is your best friend while writing a paper. To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

At the beginning of this English course, I was so nervous and scared that I would fail. I do not think I have ever been a good writer. It has always terrified me because I have difficulty putting my thoughts down on paper. This course has proven to be highly inspiring to me as well as frightening. It has really taught me more about the understanding of the writing process and structure, in which helped me to not focus so much on the actual writing parts.…
