As men and women made the long, harrowing journey across the Atlantic to the unknown, unwelcoming lands of the New World, religion to many of these pioneers was the only means to find comfort and hope amid battering waves and wicked cases of seasickness. William Bradford and John Smith were no different: religion was their guiding light, both consciously and subconsciously, in their settling of the New World. Despite the differences in Bradford and Smith’s approaches to recounting their histories of settling, both Bradford and Smith demonstrate through their prose and dealings with the Native peoples that religion was the most important aspect in all of their decisions; and in turn illuminate religion to be of the greatest values of European…

The sport of baseball has always been known as America’s pastime. Since the beginning of its existence back in 1846, it gained popularity quickly as the sport grew. Their journey reached its peak during the late 1930s into the 1960s with the help of Wendell Smith.…

I am interesting in applying to PLFSOM because I have a desire to ultimately become a primary care physician that works in underserved communities. Coming from a rural area, I know what a lack of providers in a region can do to a community. I have spent a lot of time in border towns since my dads family is originally from Mexico and I have been able to see first hand that even the biggest of border towns still has a very big proportion of their population that is underserved. Right now, I already use my Spanish to help the Spanish speaking patients that we see at our clinic but my Spanish medical terminology is not as strong as I would like. Being able to get my medical education from a school so close to the border would help me become the…

For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to attend North Dakota State University. My dad and sister are NDSU alumni, so furthering my education where they did provides us with a unique bond. Additionally, not many of my relatives attended college, allowing me to see the difficulties in providing for oneself and family without a college degree. Although I know the next seven years are going to be challenging, extremely strenuous, and will push me to the edge of my comfort zone, the satisfaction of administering medical services to those who need them will make it worthwhile. Not only will I be able to care for others with a Pharm.…

I am a first-generation Latina student at The Ohio State University. Being from inner city Toledo, Ohio, I attended a public district where 80% of students received free or reduced lunch and the graduation rate was at an all time low of 49%. My parents had not graduated high school, therefore once college applications became relevant, they unfortunately could not help me. Through 25 different scholarships, I was able to attend OSU without any loans and truly believed I was on the right track to achieving the "American Dream". To my dismay, once classes began, I was lost.…

Since my freshman year of high school, my passion for agriculture has flourished. I did not come from an agricultural background as my parents worked for the State and Amtrak, but I was intrigued about California’s leading industry. Up until my freshman year in high school, the closest I had gotten to agriculture was when I would grow a garden of vegetables during the spring for fresh produce. I became involved in my school’s FFA chapter and was infatuated with the FFA from the start. I saw it as a way to become involved as well as to expand my leadership and social skills.…

As a Howard student, I will be able to reach my full potential intellectually and socially and strive for success in my intended field of study, Political Science. I’ve been interested in political science for a long time and what intrigued me the most was that I would be learning more about other countries and focusing on their cultures, belief systems, and stances on various international issues and crises. As well as an in-depth look at domestic politics and this country’s government, which goes perfectly with Howard’s convenient location in Washington, D.C. the home of Capitol Hill, The White House, and 177 foreign embassies.…
