Communication: The Most Important Factors That Supported My Nursing Career

Looking back over the past 14 weeks, I have improved in communicating with the patients and nurses properly with experiences that supported my nursing career. Communication Is one of the most important factors to built that nursing-patient relationship and be able to educate patients effectively. With education through communication there is a less likelihood of making an error and possible causing harm. For example, at Springdale, on the second or third week of clinical rotation, my communication skills was poorly distributed among the staff and the patients. Luckily, as the weeks continued, my communication skills were increasing for better results. Another improvement that was established throughout the first week until the last week, making some advancement, is becoming more competent in nursing skills. The nursing skills include physical assessment, inserting catheters, inserting nasogastric tubes, changing a wound dressing, and keeping a sterile field without crossing it. In the first several weeks of nursing school, we only learned few skills but mastering or becoming close to mastering them was difficult ', noticing right away that with practice and time anything is possible. Now that we are done with the last week of clinical, I can say that with practice makes perfect. Strengths I have gained in the past 14 weeks are confidence, courage, and motivation. Confidence was illustrated with all the tasks performed from the beginning to the end, making me a new person, a person who cares and has reliability on the work achieved. Courage was seen when taking responsibility on my actions regardless of the situation or time, just knowing that your telling the truth about something is the best courage of foundation to accomplish trustworthiness among the health care team. On the other hand, Motivation was active from the first weeks of class because it kept me going on tough days and good days. Kept me going on days that I struggled the most in class and at clinical rotations. The reason for being limited is because we all fear the unknown, but once we know what to expect, we might not fear the unknown anymore. At the same time, there are also limitations when it comes to skills that we haven 't practice or we have but forget the steps to complete them. Therefore, having the fear of not being able to perform a skill at the professor 's level is one fear that I can change how I view my future actions. For example, when I started my clinical rotation at Springdale and doing my first physical assessment, my fear was not being able to finish the physical assessment within ten minutes and asking important questions. Fortunately, my professor said that I was asking good questions regarding the health of the patient and I was over ten minutes. Once the second rounds of physical assessments came by, ten minutes felt like a longer period to ask questions. Constriction and pressured was felt when nurses did want to teach the nursing students anything for the main reason that we were in first block. Both limitation and constriction are my fears here and upcoming semesters because we all want to learn everything to become great nurses, but if limited and constricted by superior minds, how do they expect us to become like
