What is memory? Memory is the nervous system’s capacity to retain and retrieve skills and knowledge. Memory allows a person to go back through their brain a take bits and pieces of memory, or knowledge and use them in everyday life. Everyday a person’s brain is encoding all the information that is being thrown at them, to use again later. Whether that memory is used to recant a story, draw up an image you once saw years before, explain something that happened to you to a friend, or even complete a difficult exam in psychology class. Within this application paper, one will understand how to apply psychological key principles of memory, to an everyday situation of life.

Retrieval is the act of recalling or remembering stored information when it is needed. Again using the computer as an example, the retrieval would be when a person is able to pull up something that has been stored in the computer's hard drive and is know able to see it on the computer’s monitor. During the test your working memory is active and is retrieving all of the encoded information that has been stored in your brain from going over the flashcards.
