James Gregory: Perfect For Open Online Courses

Improved Essays
Open online courses are not for everyone, but one person I know that would be perfect for online courses though is James Gregory. Gregory is perfect for open online courses because he is persistent, flexible, and unselfish.
Being flexible is important, especially when it is with something you are not used too. In regular schools, the teacher is there to help if you do not understand something, but on MOOC that is not the case. In MOOC there are thousands of students in one class, it is impossible for the professor to help just one student! This problem however will not be much of a problem for Gregory. Being persistent in anything is important, but MOOC is not something you just breeze through. Actually MOOC has proven to be very hard. One example is that “46,000 students attempted the first course last Fall and only 13,000 students actually completed it!” This data alone shows how difficult MOOC is, but Gregory has the perseverance unlike the other candidates to complete MOOC which so many other students have already failed at.
Lastly one trait that Gregory has that many lack is that he is unselfish. MOOC has an enormous amount of participants, grading has proven to be difficult, especially with written work. In this case MOOC relies on peer grading, which means five people read your work and grade it. Now this is where Gregory’s unselfishness comes in, some may become jealous because someone does better than them and just well fail them. MOOC kind of had a solution to this which is not to allow that person to grade again, but Gregory would grade his classmates answers honestly and correctly because he is known for being a team player.
In conclusion, Gregory has all the traits that would make the perfect fit for open online courses, he is flexible, persistent, and unselfish. His flexibility will help in the change of way in teaching. His perseverance will make him one of the few students who actually complete a MOOC. Lastly his unselfishness is great for the peer grading part because he'll give the honest and correct answers. Gregory is an all around perfect student for
