My communication hero is William Sanford Nye, most commonly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy. He is best known for his role in the popular television series Bill Nye The Science Guy that was targeted to engage a young audience in order to bring about a passion and understanding for the sciences. During the show, Bill spoke in terms easy to understand without undermining the science behind what he was saying. During interviews, Bill steers away from any jargon, using common words and phrases to explain his demonstrations. Bill is an ethical communicator showing empathy through his writing. He communicates with academic integrity and honesty, giving credit where credit is due.

Christa Schmitt Mass Communication Midterm Matt Prince states that his duty to Taco Bell as a brand is to protect and promote it. Essentially he means that his job has two components. The first job is to creatively and strategically entice consumers. His second responsibility is to defend the brand when it falls under scrutiny. The reading I chose is the introduction to Chapter 1 of the book Beginnings of Western Science. It concerns the term “science” and, therefore, the debate over whether or not science existed before 1450 A.D. The controversy according to the author, David Lindberg, arises out of the many different definitions for “science.” He said, “. . .we have no choice but to accept a diverse set of meanings as legitimate and do our best to determine from the context of usage what the term ‘science’ means on a specific occasion” (Lindberg 2).…

For the first major assignment for Professor Julia Green’s Communication 211 for Spring 2016, I partnered with classmates Lori Rainey and Sarah Beattie to “analyze how the different forms of communication yield different results when it comes to communicating” (Green, Week 4 - Major Assignment 1: Blog). By going through the exercises, I have reconfirmed that the form of online communication best suited to me is email versus social media such as Facebook, or texting. Unlike some people, I find texts are more difficult to respond to for many reasons, including the limitation of the touch-screen keypads, as well as the synchronicity of the communication, depending on the user’s attention to their phone. As an example, I routinely forget my cell…

My thoughts on human nature can best be summed up by the character Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” Our ability to critically think about our behavior and make choices is what makes us human and sets us apart from our hominid ancestors. In fact, as far as other species are concerned, there is no concept of “good” and “evil”; there is predator and prey, threatening and safe, dominant and submissive. Morality is not a factor at play in the animal kingdom.…
